I am mainly asking if I can remove the tail shaft housing while the tranny is in the car...I worded it bad.

Trans must be removed. You remove the bolts that hold the tail housing, then you release a big ring using pliers that fit in a groove, it's released from the top. The tail housing then slides back off the mainshaft. The speedo gear will need to be removed before you do this. Parts you need will be the tailhousing gasket, bushing, & a new seal. Make sure you get a good seal with the rubber boot, lots of parts stores sell a seal without this & if it leaks it will throw gear lube all over your underbody. Call Brewer's or Passon, they both have every 4-speed part you could imagine.
