Brand X Modern Musclecars

-
The only Daytonas running high 14's box-stock were the IROC R/T versions with the 224hp DOHC engine in them. Regular Turbo I and Turbo II cars were lucky to break out of the 16's stock. I remember the VNT cars were better, a friend had a black one, but those are as rare as hen's teeth... haven't seen another in years.

It's apples to oranges though. I've had a couple of Turbo cars (87 Shelby Charger, 86 Lazer XT) and they were nice cars. Quick, not fast. Sure I've seen modified cars running 12's, 11's, even 10's but honestly, the drive-wheel location does make a huge difference in what makes a true musclecar as do the noises coming from the tail pipes. The 5.0L Mustang was less money than the Turbo Dodge cars when new and was significantly quicker... IMHO it was the Duster 340 of the 1980's.

Imagine though if the Daytona had been built RWD with even a mild 318 under the hood... Mustang? What's a Mustang? ;)

Here's my VNT Turbo LeBaron:

Here's a 360 Dodge Daytona I saw last year in Indy:

I agree, front engine rear wheel drive Mopars are what it's all about....
but until I get my Barracuda on the road, I'll continue to hammer on my
Turbo cars.

BTW I have a road test of a 1987 Daytona Shelby Z in an old
Mopar High Perf. mag that ran a 14.92 out of the box. This was
the 2.2 Intercooled 8 valve 174 h.p. motor. Speed was 95.95 mph

Also these cars did not have Japanese motors. They were designed
and built by the same folks that did the 340's, 440's etc.

Not that most of you care, but lets get the record straight on
these cars. They were true American cars.

I guess I am all alone on this issue, I have had mopars and chevy's most of my life, along with the harleys, without going into 45 years plus of cars, the recent ones are 85 Iroc-z , 97 z-28, 2003 hemi ram, 68 gts. 1940 ply coupe , 1968 buick wild cat , a 65 chevy elcamino , a 84 olds cutlass chevy powered bracket car, and a 2000 buick daily driver. ...the only one i dont still have is the 97 z28. had a few fords back in the day, but most were not the best cars i ever had.
interesting side note; most all the mustang owners here wont race against the chevys or the mopars ,or anything else for that matter. they have their own night once a month ,and race each other....
i guess that way they can say that they never got beat by a ..... (fill in the blank )

I got my DL in 1998. You older guys are lucky cause you had all these great old cars avaliable at the time you started driving. To this day I would give my left one for a 68/69 Road Runner. I never had anything but Dodge trucks since 00'. The duster is the first "car" my family has owned in 40 years. I guess we are truck people.
The hot cars back in my prime had to be the 98-ish camaros. God I wanted one so bad when I turned 16. Several of my buddies had them & at the time I thought they were the fastest thing next to a missle. Loved to go cruzin' in a z28. Never been a big fan of GM, but the F-body camaro mated with either a LT-1 or a LS-1 will put a smile on any face.

I read somewhere that Chrysler only made 6 or 8 LeBaron GTC convertibles with the VNT engine, is that so? Could be the Hemi'Cuda convertible of the future! ;)

I'll trade this guy for a '71 Hemi'Cuda convertible anyday! Having said that,
this car is quite rare on it's own. The following image gives a
breakdown on production numbers.

GTCVNTData.jpg

The VNT 2.2 engine has a steel crank and rods, Mahle pistons with
full floating wrist pins, and a heavy duty Getrag A-568 5 speed tranny.

These cars will run 140+ on top end. Not bad for a "granny car".

0-60 times were 7.2 seconds

That is a nice and rare LeBaron. I guess there are different opinions on musclecars , the 60s and 70s people are set on the fact that musclecars are only V8 RWD sad to say I feel that way. I do like the american 4 cyl. performance cars alot I had a Daytona Shelby for a while and it was a blast but it never felt like a musclecar. I remember not that long ago when most musclecar purists didn't consider a duster 340 a musclecar because it was a small block. I do remember the Omni turbo cars used to embarrass the big and small block cars at the Mopar nats in the 80s , I know I was impressed

HemiRam, I know what you mean about the 340 Dusters. I had a new one in 1971 and
it got very little respect until you put the hammer on the big block cars. Those
light weight high winding rockets were a blast. After that I bought a 1971
340 'Cuda hardtop. I had more fun with the Duster.

Tony I've had everything from the little Shelby car to a 440 six pac bee including my current Cobra that would most likely beat the Duster at almost everything , but nothing thrills me like my Duster with a 440 , it handels like crap but I still love it. I guess since a 72 340 Duster was my first really nice car you always go back to your first love.

MOPAR OR NO CAR!!!

i havent had a brand x vehicle yet and dont plan on it, unless its a pos fwd for enduro races :snakeman:

im gettin hated on on the lowrider site for buildin my 5th ave into a lowrider cuz its not a full framed chebbie. i love lowriders and mopars, so i combined em both, so for them mopar haters :thebirdm:

my first car was a AMC grimalin and i was 10 years old, lol grandfother had a salvage yard and gave it it me (running). so far i have had as listed from age 16... 64 ford truck,79 firebird, 2 76 ford trucks, 80 camaro and 89, 69 mustang cope, 2 68 dodge chargers (one was a parts car), 73 charger, 73 duster, still got and drive my 96 dodge ram 1500 4x4 and working on my 69 barracuda. the only none doge i've owned in the past 6 years in my wifes mini van lol chebby...:read2:

My first old cat was a 72 Chevelle way back in 94(yup, Im a younster) followed by a 81 Camaro. I got tired of non running cars and bought a 69 Road Runner clone in 96 for $1800. Been playing with Mopars since.

I did have a few non Mopars slip in as drivers though. 89 Turbo T-Bird, 91 5.7L Z28, 98 VW Golf GTI VR6 (actually a nice car) 2000 Civic SI (tin can). After those I started by all Mopar, 94 Jeep, 98 Dakota and now my 04 Ram. Sometimes I wonder why I keep buying them. Guess I like the punishment and bad fuel mileage.

LOl! It's an addiction Adam. I'm currently on a 95 Dakota, and 2 Dusters. The only thing keeping me from feeding the addiction is the lack of garage space. :toothy10:

My first muscle car was a '71 Challenger. I still regret selling it.:banghead:
Oh well...currently driving a '98 I-30 and will soon replace it with a new Challenger...at least that's the plan anyways.

I know I have had a few Mopar toys as well

69 RR clone
74 Charger 400 4bbl
69 Barracuda 340
67 Barracuda formula S 273 4 speed
67 Barracuda slant 6
65 Dart
70 Cuda 400
71 Scamp 340
and my currant car 71 Dart 360 4speed.

WORD!

This is the only other vehicle I think I can stand not being Mopar. Its a 37 Ford Pick Up I have been working on.

6.5" Chop.

Its a work in progress and so much damn fun building that I don't care if it's old Ford. Oh, and disregard the Goodyear Slicks, I just stuck those up to the back for fun. The truck will be slammed too.

A lowrider 5th Ave. I vote yes! :notworth::notworth::notworth:

i am just finishing a 1983 ltd wagon that is all 5.0 mustang, 5speed 8.8 lsd rear lowering springs big sway bars etc.. i bought a hammered 89 5 speed mustang a few years ago, and it was fun as hell to drive, but was a cop magnet. i think the wagon will be a little more subtle...
my dirt track car is a mustang also, 1 overall points championship 2001, rookie of the year 2001, nevada shootout winner 2002, and a bunch of other misc wins.. (i like fox-bodies)
i also like 2.3 ford 4cyl,472-500 cadillacs, and studebakers...

i am a closet mustang fan. a few weeks ago i checked out the new bullit mustang. id buy that in a second over the new chally. actually for a split second i thought of getting rid of it all, my darts, essex, and ram, for the new bullit and a beater truck. there are a few other cars i like too. i sorta like the 80s montes, fomulas, and of coarse the ls1 f bodies.
