i have an 8.25 rear end in my valiant, but i want, scratch that, NEED new gears. i understand that i have to get a whole new piece to swap higher gears because of the machining to put 2.45 gears in it. i would just buy a new chunk, but i cant swap just the center of my rear as it only has a removeable inspection plate and everything else is one piece. what can i source an axle from, or what are my options to get a better set under there? 2.45s are the only reason i havent hit the 1/8th yet to get a base time. what is it in the rear that has to be changed to run numerically higher gears?

thanks, jeff.

You only need a new differential carrier (along with the new gears of course), not the axles or housing. As the ratio gets numerically smaller the OD of the pinion gear gets larger. Normally this is compensated by making the thickness of the ring gear thinner. In the case of the 2.45:1 ratio the ring gear would be too thin so they machine the diff carrier so the ring gear can be thicker. Using this carrier with higher numerical gears you do not have enough adjustment in the side bearings to get the gear mesh set-up right.

If you shop around you will be able to pick up a limited-slip differential, gears and a master install kit (bearings, shims, gaskets, seals) for under $500. If you are not prepared to install and set-up the new parts a competent shop that specializes in 4x4 work (they do a lot of axle work) should be able to do the swap in 2-3 hours.

Hey Jeff,
I haven't seen you around here much lately. What you have to change can be seen and done when you take the inspection plate off. It is called the carrier. You have to take the center pin out of the carrier. It is usually held in with a setscrew or pin and then with some minor persuasion will just drop right out. the next thing to do is push the axels in from the wheel end and remove the c-clips. This will allow you to pull the axels back out and away from the carrier. The carrier is held in by 2 bearing caps. One on each side. Take these caps off and the carrier will come out with a little help. The only thing after that is to take out the pinion by removing the pinion nut and pushing it or pulling it out.
Reassembly is just the opposite but make sure you know the tolerances and torques.

The Mopar Performance Sure-Grip part number DCC-4529273 for $289.95 on the search is a carrier and limited slip unit. All you need are the gears and new bearings to go with it.

well turds. thats what i thought i had linked. i shoulda checked it. oh well.
yes, its nice to be back talking. hows it going coyote jack. sometimes stuff starts happening and i have big gaps in my participation on the forum.

but i always bring my questions and comments up. that reminds me, on saturday i saw the cleanest /6 4 door dart ever. it was super clean and nice. my dad and i repaired and painted the front bumper on his taurus.

and... where can i get a ring and pinion installation kit? i googled, and the best i could find was something called a mini installation kit.

Differential Mini Installation Kit Chrysler 8.25"
$31.95
C8.25IK
Carrier & Pinion Shims, Pinion Nut & Seal, Cursh Sleeve, Marking Compound, Brush, Loctite & Gasket

what else would i need?

Anyone that sells rings and pinions will have the kit. It's usually called a master installation kit when it comes with all the bearings. I got mine from Randy's Ring and Pinion.

NOTE: if you decide to do business with Randy's pick up a mopar magazine and quote the magazine price. A blind phone call will not get you the same price and they will want to know the magazine and month of the add to gat the magazine ad pricing.

well, i couldnt find it on summitracing.com ... so ill guess ill check randy's ring and pinion? fairly priced i hope.

Summit and Jegs have limited amount of parts for mopars. Mancini Racing prices in most cases are just as low and they only sell stuff for mopars. Check them out. They have the same diff and also have gears & bearing kits.
