I recently came across a new project car. A 1968 Dodge Dart 270. It currently has a slant 6 with a 904 transmission.

My question to you guys with a wealth of information is -- What engine can I swap up to? The slant 6 is in rough shape as you can see by the pictures.
I was thinking I could drop a 318 in it relatively easily without having to change anything...i.e. motor mounts/thrust converter/transmission. But after reading some of the posts on this site, a 340 would be a nice score if I don't have to change anything.
Does anyone know if I'd have to change anything if I switched up to a 340?
I managed to get the slant 6 running, but there's just to much to do to keep it going. I figured I might as well put my resources into a more powerful powerplant.
Thanks in advance!!

Change the k-member to a v-8 and you can bolt in a 318/340/360 with no problems whatsoever. My car was originally a 170 /6 and is now a 340. BTW, I think Moroso? may have engine mount adapters to put a v-8 on a /6 frame but I don't know how strong it would be.

wow...that is one clean engine bay. You did an awesome job. Thanks for the information. I guess I'm in the market for a "K" bar now.
No changes necessary to the torque converter or transmission correct?
Did you change any of your other stock items?

What is the reason for the K- member chage? To of a lite duty unit or clearence problems. I am doing a similar change.

The mounts on the K frame are different from /6 to SB.

I have a V8 K frame for sale. $100 + shipping.

Another alternative is a set of adapter motor mounts. Transdapt and shumacher maker them. Transdapt are much less expensive, but the hardware needs replacing.

Neat car to start with, has manual steering on it which will help with exhaust/headers.

So the Slant 6 Dart K-Member will work for a V-8 Swap? I have found the motor mounts but any other issues with the slant 6 K Member?

The slant-six transmission will not work with any V8s.

340s are cool, but a 360 would be the same amount of work, for less money. Unless you already own a 340, that is.

There is no real advantage to changing the k-member, unless you go with a 73+ unit. The driver's side mount is actually the same on the slant six and small block k-members. It's the passenger side that is different.

To swap in a small block, you'll need different motor mount brackets, a different transmission, it would be a good idea to get a bigger radiator, and you'll probably want to swap in a stronger rear axle. If you put in a different axle, you'll need to shorten your driveshaft.

I Have A 71 Dart, Was Originally/6 Car, But Now Has A Happy 440, Used Schumacher Motor Mounts ,retained Factory K-member, All K-members Same Other Than Motor Stand Locations[with The X-ception Of Hemi-440 Factory Ones] Nothing U Have Concerning /6 Will Interchange...tranny-mounts Etc. Will Need A Complete V-8 Set Up[motor-trans-rad-exhaust-driveshaft] But Dont Get Overwhelmed, Its Not A Bad Swap, check Out The Different Forums For Info And Get Books On How To's...just Takes Money And Time..lots Of Time And Money...but Would Be Worthwhile In Long Run......good Luck

You might want to check out Mopar Muscle Magizine - they did a tech article on a s/6 to v8. I am currently in middle of a 68 Dart project myself. Starting out the same way you are. Good luck with your project.

Do you recall which month's issue?
Thanks for all the input!

Not until I get a new engine dropped in. At my current rate of progress that might be a couple years. I didn't realize how involved this would be.
I'm glad I have you guys to fall back on if I need questions answered.
