If any of you guys have any info on these or know someone who has used them, and what they did with the low end of their motor and whats a good size cam for it. Its a 440 and will be used pretty much just on the street. Were at the point now trying to decide what to do to it and how to build it so any input would be great, Thanks Joe

those will give you a ton of low end torque. You will want a cam that accentuates that. Short duration, high lift. Comp extreme energy high lift? Don't plan on making hp past 5500 or so. Those were originally designed for big heavy cars to give them some extra grunt to get them going.

That is gonna look soooooo cool when done - ya' BETTER keep us all updated with continuing pics on the build of your car!

:worthles: Lots'n'Lots of Pics!!!

ocdart, if you click the link in my signature it brings you to my build thread, this is actually an old picture

It really depends on which long rams that you have. There's about 1,000-1,200 rpm difference in peak torque. The "long" longs have peak torque around 3,600 while the "shorts" are above 4,600 (as I recall). Physically they are the same size, but the length of the dividing runner in each pair of tubes is shorter with the "shorts".

OK i think i have the shorts cause my divider doesnt go all the way (below)

This is a pic i took down in florida are these the longs?

Joe, yes you have the "shorts". They are worth quite a bit more than the "longs". But, it looks like somebody started polishing yours......

I have a set of the long rams ('61) with the carbs that I was going to put on my '63 Newport... It has a 361 in it now but, I was going to swap in a '74 440 (cast crank) with 516 closed chamber heads that have bigger valves and minor porting... Just another project... But I love it when I see them in used on other cars... Terrific!.. Great job and great getting a set of '64 shorter rams (hard to get, only see them once in a while)...

ya i started polishing them haha, so i gotta deal then i got the intakes, carbs and air cleaners from a guy for $200 sweet!

Very cool, in deed! Hope you used a RB motor for the mock-up. The higher deck height will push the carbs farther apart than a 361-400 will.

As far as cam selection goes, a little more information is needed. What is the compression ratio? Rear gear?

For the sake of discussion, a 3000 lb car, 9.0:1 compression, 3.23:1 rear gear could use a cam with 195-214º duration @ .050". Bump the compression to 9.5:1-10.5:1 and the gear to 3.55:1-3.73:1, 215-224º @ .050" cam. The hotter cam will give a slightly lopey idle and low manifold vacuum. If you're running power brakes and/or A/C, you'll need a vacuum accumulator.

Hope this is helpful.

Absolutely an incredible deal. Might be worth close to $2k if you hadn't started polishing them.........

I got $250 for ONE AIR CLEANER that I had.

Nope. The wider spacing between the heads brings the carbs CLOSER to each other.

we did the mock up with the 440 that were using in the car, if you think the polishing is bad then cutting off the heat risers didnt help, i needed the clearence, they were all rotted threw and this car wont be drivin in the winter, im also cutting off the coil mounts and the vacume whole on the top and having it all welded over and smoothed out to be polished for a nice clean look, sorry if i broke some of you original guys hearts haha

Like the man said you got a steal of a deal... The air cleaners are hard to find, but the '64 short (long) ram is as rare... I was wondering how you were going to make them fit... It's a shame you had to mod them, but you got to do what you got to do, right... I have seen them on a on a 71-72 Road Runner that was on eBay... You better have some big tires on that baby to take all that torque... It will be great to hear how it works out... If you gottem-smokem... Tires that is....

very KOOL,, those are deffinitly the short rams,, the long would be sitting on top of your fenders,,great deal,, i know a street rodder that just bought a long set for 75 bucks,,, there are still some deals out there,,just never in my area,,

I wonder how that would work as an EFI setup since they are already modded ? put injectors down at the heads ?

Short and Long are the SAME physical size. What makes them narrower is that they are on an RB instead of a B block.

i guy did that in a magazine i was reading a little while ago. it kind of doesnt make sense to do it cause the injectors are down at the heads, so the air isnt really getting mixed with the fuel at the beginning. seems pointless to me to do it on that style intake.

It will still work with FI because is AIR SPEED that increases the volume in the chamber. Need to run it rich enough, though.
