I would like your input on headers/exhaust for my set-up. Mostly street, but will see some track time.

416 ci
10.3:1 CR
2.02/1.60 Home ported X-heads with valve job
Comp Cams Flat Tappet Hyd 240/246 @ .050 .507/.510

Are 1 5/8" primaries to small? I notice most of you run 2.5" pipes. Is 3" too large. I know that I want turndowns near the axle because I don't care for visible tips. Anybody have any experience with the Dynomax headers? Also thinking about 2.5" or 3' Dynomax Race Bullets because I want it loud. I know TTI's are the way to go, but I am on a tight budget.

Any input would be appreciated, pros, cons, etc. Thanks.

1 3/4 into 2 1/2 pipes :toothy10:

i dont think 3 inch would be TOO small though

I doubt you'd see any type of substantial difference from 1 5/8 or 1 3/4 tubes with the cam you are running.

You could get Dougs or tti as they don't hang below the centerlink.

If you plan on hopping it up with more camshaft later, get a straight 1 3/4" header... Hooker, hedman, etc and leave the above two behind.

A 1-5/8 tube IMO, would be the best diameter for the street and lite strip.
You may even find it better at the strip. High torque to get going

Exhaust wise, a 2-1/2 on the street is also fine.
The problem with 3 inch exhaust and if it is coupled with larger diameter headers is low torque and high sound.

The tti headers seem to fit the best and offer a good balance and high clearance from the street. That is what I would do myself if the pockets were deep enuff.

So, 3" exhaust, thru mufflers, slows it down?

It's a combo dependent things and your combo is mello by compare to what could be done and what it's being used for isn't a strip monster.

A 3 inch exhaust will increase top end once you get going no doubt, but it could loose some bottome end power. I said COULD and not will.

The best exhaust is free flowing non-restictive movement of exhaust gas.
IF the (Exhaust) gas stays hot, it'll want to escape quicker than cooler (Exhaust) gas.

Cooler exhaust condesnses and slows down. Thus is also the popular addition to headers like the coating or wrapping of the pipes.
Drag cars use a shorter system since tail pipes extend the system and offer more resistance in it's over the axle bends.

You won't see a bonus from 3" pipe until you are close to 500hp. With the cam choice and heads, I don't see you getting near it. Closer to 400 with big torque, but it will be done at 5Krpm. The smaller tubes are fine, and you dont need 3". You will not feel a difference between the two sizes. I would get a simple custom bent 2.5" comrpession bent system. That will keep you for a while, even as you do upgrades.

Put the 3" on everyone always does upgrades, and when/if you do you'll already have the exhaust for it...

Thanks guys. I plan on a supercharger in the future. I would assume at that point the 1 3/4" tubes and 3" pipes may benefit me more.

MOoe than likely LOL.
Hair drier or roots?

If you put a hair dryer on it later, you'll be tossing the headers.

Buy the cheapest POS units you can get in that case. Used cheapiescan be had at swaps for $10-20.

Why spend good money on something that won't be compatible later?

If you put anything but Dougs or tti's on it be prepared for dented/crushed tubes,so make sure you pick up a couple of sets of those $20 headers..:-D

I thought you ment hair dryer as in centrifugal blower not turbo. I'll be going with the Paxton Novi most likely so I will still be able to use regular headers. I would like to do a turbo, but there is too much custom fab involved. I wish someone made A body tubo kits.

If you plan on running anything serious neither header is the right choice.

what about 1 7/8 hedman huslers with 3.5" collector that runs into a 2.5" full exhaust in an abody with a 360
