What exactly did 442 stand for ... I know it wasn't size of the motor.

4 = 400 cubic inch

4 = four speed

2= two carbs

I've heard all different type explanations.

I always thought it was
4= 4 barrel carb
4=four speed
2= dual exhaust

But it looks like it can mean a bunch of things, dependant on year, if this is correct....the last one was curious....never knew there were 442s in the 90s....
