I have a 74 Duster with the stock 3 speed transmission. It is floor shift, and I was wondering whether or not going to the junk yard to find a 4-speed from the same era would be okay. If it is okay to grab a junk yard tranny, then what vehicle could donate a 4 speed that would bolt right in?

You can use a 4 speed out of about any A-body (Duster, Demon, Dart, Barracuda) 67 and up for certain. I think on the earliar A-body's things may have been different but not sure. Then it can depend if you want a overdrive or non-overdrive transmission. If you want to build your engine in anyway you'll want a non-overdrive and those can be hard to find, but they are around.

try ebay parts in the collector cars section i see 4 speeds there from time to time

The over drive is an aftermarket piece by a company called gear-vendors. pretty steep price though bout 2500.00 clams. Luv the duster BTW

I think I will be able to differentiate between an OD and non-OD (thanks to Outlaw), now my question has to do with installation. Will the 4 speed bolt right up to the 3spd bellhousing or do I need to yank the bell housing from the lucky 4spd donor (providing I find one)? And are there any special alignment considerations (something like a steering shaft where they have to be aligned correct to function properly)?
Thanks for the help.

SGGDuster, if you have a bellhousing with multiple patterns where the tranny mounts it will accept the 4spd (see the the picture in Outlaws link). Also, the other thing you need to pay attention to is the clearance hole in the bell housing the article talks about that too. Don't forget the slip yoke that goes into the tranny on the end of the drive shaft. The 4spd and 727 auto use a larger one than the 3pds and 904 auto. You will need to swap that too.

One other thing. The A/F body 4spd are more rare thant the long tail shaft trannies used in B/E/C and pickup/vans. You can can use the long tail shaft tranny in an A-body with no real issues. Check out the article in Outlaws link that I wrote about using the A833OD from a D100 pickup in my Barracuda.

I was just searching Ebay for parts and remembered reading your post, so I took down this #. Try this item # on Ebay 4562043141. It`s at $150.00 now with a day and half to go. Good luck!

I just picked up an 833OD today that has the bearing retainer machined down to accept the earlier bell housing register
