My 64 Barracuda Progress

-
I'm really not sure what rear is in the car at this point.
Was there a different rear end used in these if the car was a 6 or and 8?
I know the car was originally a /6, but when the PO swapped in the 273 he may have swapped the axle.

So I dunno I'll have to look into that. Not a big concern yet.
After the suspension is sorted out I'll probably do disc brake conversion on the front.
Then I'll figure out axle and rear brakes at the same time.

hopefully the previous owner swapped it already. i had a 65 barracuda that came with the cammando v8 stock and a 4 speed, and plymouth still put a 7 1/4 rear under that thing. i dont know how they ever lasted on these cars. i swapped mine out for an 8 1/4 as soon as i got it.

Wide rear tires and a stock 273 with a 4 speed will break a 7 1/4" rear easily. Ask me how I know.

I'll take your word for it! haha I might be headed down that road soon.
I guess I'll find out.

How do you tell the difference between the 2 axles?

Your car should will have the 7 1/4 factory, but here is a pic of the rearends. I think I got it from someone on FABO!

Thanks Keith!

Here's a couple pics I had. Can anybody tell from these?
I can take more detailed pics when I get the car back.

It doesn't really seem to match the bolt pattern on the 7 or the 8?

Any guesses?

Looks like you got an 8 & 1/4 there Evan....

We'll get something worked out for a rear end down the road.... Changing the gear ratio can really wake the car up, and IMO might as well make it an 8 3/4 if yah do that....

But for now that should work very well :read2:

Thanks for the info Tony.
So the guy must've swapped it out with the 273 I'm assuming.

I'm not too worried about it for now like you said.

Can't wait to get the car back, sounds like your Dad did an Awesome job!

Ok here's the update.

Paul Wagner @ Team-Dart (www.team-dart.com) did an excellent job on the motor swap. The 318 is killer, runs excellent, sounds insane, and hauls ***.
I'll talk to Paul tomorrow and get all the part specs on the engine. Its got a pretty bumpy cam in it, and Edelbrock aluminum SP2P-318 intake, 4bbl Holley carb.

Couple minor things I need to look into, got a new clutch in it, but I've got a shake in the trans as it revs up in first for some reason. Also the clutch slips a little when I punch it for some reason. Also have an oil leak from the bottom of the trans, so maybe the rear main seal? Not sure yet, but not major stuff.

I put on the new tach and gauges I picked up from Summit recently. A Sunpro Super Tach II, and just a standard Summit gauge pack. Few pics of that below too.

Got the rims & tires I bought off of Vic Storm installed, and they look great. Unfortunately the rear tires were a little too wide, and rubbed the rear fenderwells. The passenger side rear fender cracked from rubbing, turned out its had some rust and bondo repair. I installed a set of Monroe Max Air air shocks today on the rear, and jacked it up about 1.5". That gave me just enough clearance and eliminated the rubbing problem.

I'll get some pics of the new stance with the air shocks tomorrow.

Here ya go!

Sorry thats a ton of pics, but I'm really happy with the stance!

Looking good. That's about the same stance mine has, but I used springs rather than air shocks.

Thanks physhy. Ya the air shocks work fine for now and are a quick fix to keep enough clearance back there for daily driving.

When I have room to tear the car down for a restoration it will get new springs.

Holy cow, I forgot how lumpy that cam is.... gotta love those idles 8)

Sweet Sweet car fadingfast and the engine is awesome! What cam is that anyway? Sounds and looks fantastic with the 2 tone paint. That would be a fun car to drive, I am really excited to get going on mine after seeing how yours came together.

FadingFast,Looking good!I also did the air shocks til $$$ start flowing for springs. In this pic. it was going on tow truck for alignment, also cranked up the front abit for clearance.Gotta get some new pics, taken, she sits nice now.340 sedan is gonna like the looks of your car!LOL!!
