i have a 73 duster and i was just curious to what your guy's opinion is. Should i get a 318 from a junk yard or from here if anyone has one, or should i build up the slant six that is in my car right now let me know what you think. Also are any of you selling carbs and headers for the /six? THANKS!

If money is no problem..I would go for a 318. You can do a lot with them and their a pretty good engine. There's also a lot of members with parts up for sale in the Classified Ads section. I'm sure you will get more replys and many of us can walk you through what ever you choose to do.

Go with the 318. Very reliable and strong. Can make decent power without getting crazy on cam/compresion combos.

Where are you located. I have a 318/904 from '79 sitting collecting dust in my garage.
I have a '74 Duster. I'm doing the same thing only it'll be a 360/727 combo.

Have axcess to carb and intake and headers to a /6 and also have a brand new 360 on the stand.Memebers here have all types of motors for sale and can get you a a really good deal most of the time.Best to figure a budget first,Mrmopartech

I agree with MrM...get a plan, then make it happen. If you like to "stand out" then build the /6. It will take more $$ to go as fast as a 318, but you have the trans and engine already. Both can go fast, how fast depends on how much $$...

I'd say stick with the slant six. A decent trans rebuild with a shift kit shouldn't run you more then a $1K, depending on your area. I've got $3K into my slant and she should run a low 14, high 13. If you'd like some ideas for building your slant, shoot me a PM.

I had a slant 6 in my 68 Barracuda for four years. It had the head decked for 9:1 compression, Comp 252S cam, Offy 4bbl intake with a Holley 390cfm 4bl, Hooker 6 into 2 headers with dual exhaust. This ran through an A833OD 4spd and a 3.55 geared 8.25 sure grip rear end. The car ran well was fun to drive but was far from what any one would call "fast". Never had it on the track but it was no where near as fast as my Shelby Daytona that ran 15.2's and was slightly faster than the Avenger my wife had that ran a best of 16.9. I would estimate this car ran low to mid 16's.

Some head work; machining for for bigger valves, basic porting (bowl blend and gasket match) would likely have gotten my car into the mid 15's, more cam low 15's.

A low 14 high 13 second slant is has gotten into the range where you are making compormises in driveability, it's going to need more gear, looser convertor if it's an auto, etc. There are 10 second slants out there but they certainly are something you could use as a driver even if they are road legal.

Like the other said make a plan. I did and stick to it. You certainly can build a slant that is fun to drive without spending a bundle and if it looks like mine it will gather a lot of attention. But if you want to go fast a v8 swap to the 340/360 will be more cost effective.

i think i want to go with the 318, my tranny was just rebuilt like 2000 miles ago so it is brand new. how much do you guys think i can get a running 318 for? location(seattle washington) thanks for all your help.

ps Do i need any modification to drop that motor in my 73 duster i heard it will bolt right up is this true?

people told me that my tranny would bolt right up to the 318 so this is false info? DO i need to get the kit to drop the 318 in or can i work around it? thank you

The /6 tranny will not bolt up to the small block.

Without the kit, it's a K-frame swap.

I would go with the 318 for sure. I have heard many great sounding 318s, heck, couldn't tell they were a 318! They run strong and parts are plenty!

Where are you located?

I have 2 65 Barracudas, one with a 318 4 speed 323 rear and one with a 225 slant 6 ,4 speed,323 rear. I like the v8 car but I love the 6 cyl one. It is just so much fun to drive.I have to use the gear box more and in a different way to get it down the road and this is what driving is all about for me.If you want a stop light to stoplight fast car then the 8 cyl is the way to go if you want to get on some back roads and have some fun with the shifter then the 6 is the one. I'm building my 65 valiant wagon with a 170 slant and a 4 speed to get that same fun out of the gearbox and 23 mpg or better. Not to put down the v8 cars but if you plan on driving lots you really need to consider the price of fuel in all your decisions .It ain't gonna get cheaper as time goes on !

im located in seattle washington if anyone can give me some help on finding a 318 and tranny that would be great! what do you think i could find a running 318 for?

I'm partial to the slant six, but if your going to a V-8 and don't have an engine on hand, why not go 360. Cost will be the same.

Unless a member has one for sale and talks to you...you have many options to go for in the 318 / 904 etc. Check the Seattle area "buy & sale paper". You should still find lots of motors, trans for a fair price. Some motors may already be rebuilt but will $$$ more. (Always ask questions and for the paperwork if rebuilt). Some motors maybe sitting pulled and of course, you maybe even lucky enough to find another A body 318 parts car that works, which can save you some bucks in the long run? The skys the limit for what "you" want to spend. PS..I've seen some given away right up to 2000.00 for a stright rebuild.
