I added a breath of fresh air by ordering a clearance 'dual-snorkel' from cole@pro-spoilers.com
I turned it backwords and ducted into my firewall cowl vents. Cole has some more refined box's now, but I saved enough on this one to send it and my valve covers to Cudachick for some powder coating.......breathe, breathe in the air.........

Hope this works out OK. I did the same thing with my car 30+ years ago but had to take it off because it filled the inside of the car with gasoline fumes. My carb was in pretty bad shape at the time.

Thanks, I'll keep a nose to it .

Hi Rick, how is the quality and fit of that air box? I seen those on ebay not long ago and I want to buy one for my 73 Fury Wagon. What hight did you get, I know he offers 3 different sizes. Looks pretty cool, I never one set up through the cowl like that before!

Well, so far ,so good ! Drove about 100 miles today (80 degrees) on highway and city streets with both my box vents open, and never smelled any fuel. Looks like your 30 year old idea just needed a better carb. :salute:

Made in America quality ! I got the 3 inch, stock car style. He has several choices available now. The one I got was from the first lot, he has revised them along the way. Cole has a video you can watch @

He is probably the same one you saw on Ebay.

You beat me to it Rick!!!
Nice setup. I've been thinking of something similar with my '69 Dart rather than running a hood scoop for awhile now.
The later Darts don't have the body plugs into the cowl area so I'd have to fabricate something. We'll see. The build is still in 'plan mode'.
Considered changing that single reservoir master cylinder?

That is really cool!!!!! I really like that idea. And it looks really cool too. Where did you get the materials for that??? Did you make it?? NEVERMIND I SEE THE LINK!!!!!

Sorry to beat you to it, but it really sounds like the idea has been out there for a very long time. The one reason I went the way I did, was because of the used for nothing else body plugs. I wonder if you should consider running to the front, instead of altering your firewall ?
Yes, I really need to think of some whoa.

Cool, I'm glad you found the link. I've been thinking of doing this for a long time, but I would get beat to the stock dual snorkels everytime. I also wanted to buy from an American in a small buisness. I don't do chinese.
As far as the materials, I ordered two feet of hose from Cole, but ended up using vacuum cleaner hose and ends. Works great !

This was one of the first mods I did to my car after I bought it (in 1974). Used parts were available everywhere. My car still had a 2 barrel carb then. I just cut the snorkel off of another air cleaner & grafted it onto the original air cleaner. Then I turned it so they both pointed to the rear & hooked it up with old heater duct hose. I'm glad to see this works when you have a decent carb. Mine was old & when I went to leave home in the morning the inside of the car always smelled like gas.

What are the advantages (if any) of picking up air from the cowl, rather than running the hoses to the front of the car ? GM used Cowl Induction, but wouldn't a forced air induction type set up feed the engine more cooler air ?

I dont think the fumes and odor would be as much a problem running down the road as when the car was turned off and closed up for a while.
Get a lot of fuel vapor in the heater plenum and have the resistor pack serve as igniter... BOOM. Stranger thing have happened.

I just hope you never have a backfire. Ever. Rules out using nitrous. The strip may frown on that during inspection too. The firewall is there for just that reason, to keep fire and fumes out the passenger compartment. That's why the OEM's never did this.

Please don't ever roll your car, we don't want to lose any members. :)

The Eldebrock carb, as Eldebrock will tell you, doesn't like ALOT of air forcing it's way over the top of the carb.

Thanks for the heads-up Redfish, but the Chevy cowl induction didn't blow them up. Even if we wanted them to.

Thanks for the concern. I will simply pull the hoses out if the strip doesn't like the setup. I don't plan on burning my car up by running nitrous. The thin plastic plugs OEM's use is not going to stop fire or fumes either from entering the passenger compartment.

Because I repect the wisdom of this site, I am going to fabricate two metal doors for the cowl to seal off the area if needed. I will post pics of the work when done. I'm thinking off a cable pulled device that will also engage a fire snuff if the emergency arises.

Thanks , Rick

Couldn't you just put some sort of deflector on the front so that it picks up air pointed down instead of pointing straight forward and acting as a scoop???

I guess I could, but then I could not continue this cowl approach. If it is a bad idea, why did the factory even put those plugs there. They serve no purpose that I know of, what was the engineering thought here? It had to be meant for someone like me to use as a one foot strategy per side, instead of the four feet of hose needed to get to the front dirty air.
I know your basic concern is ultimately safety, Rednesss, and I respect you for caring about the possible danger of this approach. But I am going to vote this idea YAY, until I see a bunch more NAY'S.
Keeping 'er safe ? Rick
