Just wondering if anybody here has used it and to what avail...From what i understand, it should work with my stock points distributor...apparently it is a copy of the mallory hyfire ignition, and for the price i dont think i can go wrong...it also has a built in rev limiter, and is 50 bucks cheaper than an msd 6AL box...any opinions? should i just take the plunge and buy it? does it seem sketchy to you guys? all opinions are appreciated

thanks
Matthew

well ive read about it on other forums where a few guys had some pretty good experiences, so just wondering what anyone here thought of it or has used it

Not a copy so much as a rebadging - as near as I can tell, it is a genuine Mallory Hyfire sold through Summit. I haven't used one myself, but the reports I've seen from people running them sound like it's a decent piece.

Summit is known to have Major manufactures make stuff for them. Like there cams are/were done by Crane Cams. If there still in biz that iz!

Intakes by Profes-products is another.

The Mallory brand doesn't sell like it did in the past. MSD took the spot with there then pattented Multiple Spark Dispensing invention. Most people don't know Mallory makes seriously, tons of stuff and most OE equipment. Vist there site and get lost in the sheer amount of distributors alone and see what I'm saying.

the mallory hyfire does have the exact same specs as the summit one, so I am assuming that it is the hyfire...It seems like a great ignition, especially for the money...main reason im after it is for the rev limiter that is adjustable by a knob instead of pills (analog style like the MSD 6AL)...Another concern of mine is however for the future if i may want to add a two step, will i be able to with this box...Ive heard some say to just go for the MSD digital 6 because it has everything knob adjusted and has a two step, but its kinda pricey for me right now

if only i did a little more looking....here is a summit one with a two step as well as built in tach adapter to hook up my auto gage monster tach...seems like a wicked deal, and im tempted to give it a go...anyone have experience with these (or corresponding mallory peices)? should i upgrade my distributor to magnetic while im at it?

Shred,

I'm using a 685 Mallory box on my Ramcharger and have had zero problems. They make great stuff and have been in business a long, long time. Longer than MSD IIRC.

yes ramcharger the link to the summit box i posted is a copy of the mallory 685....seems like an awesome box...are you using a points style distributor or magnetic?

I'm using a MP distributor, but I would like to upgrade to a mallory in the future.

sounds good ramcharger...how long have you had the box on there for? anybody else using mallory ignition products?

Yes, lots of old old stuff. Excellent product. Ramcharger is right, in biz longer than MSD by a long shot.

About 1500 miles so far and I had another for about 40,000 mi back in the day. Dead nuts reliable in my experience. I also used an MSD box and never had a problem with that either, although I have had two personal friends tell that thiers died. I figured I'd stick with what works for me. I never did use the Mallory optical triggered distributor (or any optical triggered distributor for that matter) as the sensor/LED gets dirty over time and causes problems.

Here's a copy of a testament to Mallory's reliability:

MALLORY Delivers Another Season Of Perfect Performance
In The ARCA RE/MAX Series

Cleveland, Ohio (October 2006) Success is measured in many different ways, but in motorsports it ultimately comes down to laps and miles completed. With this in mind, at the end of the 2006 ARCA RE/MAX season few could argue that the Mallory Ignition systems have been an overwhelming success. Since Mallory’s CT Pro Ignitions debuted in the ARCA/REMAX series in 2005, the system, designed to limit engines to 8800 RPMs, has logged over a quarter million laps and more than 285,000 miles without a single in-race failure — an extremely impressive record in such demanding conditions.

In 2005, the ARCA RE/MAX Series mandated the use of Mallory’s rev-limiting CT Pro Ignition Systems by all of its teams. The goal was to level the playing field for the racers by eliminating the advantage of high RPM, high maintenance and higher cost engines. At the end ofthe 2006 season, the proof is in the product. This season the ARCA RE/MAX Series has witnessed an unprecedented level of competition, shattering the all-time record for the highest number of different winners in a single season - including the highest number of first time winners - with tighter racing and more white-knuckle finishes than ever seen before on ARCA tracks.

From seasoned veterans to development drivers, to rookies and series regulars, the teams attribute some measure of this intense competition to the Mallory CT Pro Ignitions. It seems the game is changing on the ARCA tracks, and the Mallory Ignition Systems are playing a vital role.

With the influx of NASCAR driver development teams, as well as the increased competition from all angles, it can be challenging to keep the field even, but with Mallory’s CT Pro ignition systems limiting the engines to 8800 RPMs,everyone has more of an equal shot out there – and we’ve clearly seen the results of that with the number of different winners and first time winners this season in the ARCA RE/MAX Series.

Frank Kimmel, now eight time champion of the ARCA RE/MAX Series and driver of the #46 Pork The Other White Meat Ford, commented, “The Mallory Ignitions have certainly made everyone more durable out there. The ignitions have not failed once, you just don’t have to worry about your ignition boxes anymore - the Mallory boxes work perfectly all race long.” Kimmel went on to state, “Also, the fact that the boxes limit at 8800 RPM has definitely been better for us because it saved our motors and valve trains. It has leveled the playing field, and makes us all have to work harder for a win.”

Randy Morse, Vice President of RE/MAX International Inc., ARCA’s title sponsor, was also very pleased with the outstanding performance of the Mallory Ignitions. “ARCA took a different direction than some other series in trying to limit engine rpm with the ignition system rather than gear ratios. From the feedback I’ve gotten from ARCA and the teams I’ve spoken with, everybody is extremely happy with the performance of the Mallory systems.”

Morse went on to say, “As far as performance goes, there have been no failures or problems, and the program has been very profitable to the teams. Limiting the RPMS has reduced R & D development and cost, and added life to these engines, which was the goal. The partnership between Mallory and ARCA has been beneficial to everyone, and we are very pleased as a series sponsor to have Mallory as a part of the ARCA RE/MAX Series.”

Heading into 2007, the Mallory CT Pro Ignition systems have delivered another year of perfect performance for ARCA. It is also clear that Mallory has effectively helped to meet ARCA’s goal of tightening the competition, and the race results speak undeniably to the success of ARCA’s partnership with Mallory Ignition.

As of 2008, they've logged over 500,000 racing miles without a single in race failure in the ARCA series. Just remember to disconnect the box when welding on the car and you should never have a problem with it.
