I am debating about getting a 600cfm 4-barrel for my mildy built 318. Right now it has an edelbrcok 500cfm. Is there a real difference between the two sizes? Is it worth the extra money? I thought this would be the best place to ask. Seems most people here are running 600cfms on their 318's.

All info is appreciated, thanks

if it is stock, a 600 cfm vacuum secondary will work fine in my estimation. remember that your motor is really an air pump. and volumetric efficiency(VE) is gonna come in at some point. in other words it may be able to pull 600 cfm in, but it may not be able to pump 600 cfm out.

what cam is in the car? are you drag racing or mostly driving on the street?

Do you already have dual exhaust?

With the cost of stuff, if your car is running ok, do you want to
spend the money on a larger carb, that on the street there will be very little
difference?

That said, I am using a #1406, 600 cfm but, amost used the 500.

I have using a performance cam, Mopar 4452759 And the correct valve springs that go with it. I am using # 302 heads on my 318.

Unless you are planning on reving it to 6000+ rpm on a regular basis the 600 won't give you anything appreciable over the 500 you already have.

It's a mild 318 that is mostly street driven. Equipped with a 340 cam, duels, 9:1 motor. I wasn't going to shell out the money for a new one. A friend of mine has one used that's on his 340, and I may be able to purchase it off him since he may upgrade to something bigger in the future. It's an edelbrock 600cfm. Just thought I would ask, if I can get it cheap I may go for it, but I defiently wouldn't consider spending the $300+ for a new one.

Thanks for the feedback.

Is it an AVS eddie?

That would sell me on it. I run a 650 eddie avs thunder series on my 318. It's a stock cop car engine with 7.5:1,a small isky cam and 360 heads. The factory installed 800 cfm tq carbs on these and believe it or not the stock tq outperforms the tuned eddie by a wide margin. Secret is the tunable air valve secondary. Motor will only use it when it's needed.

Im really not sure what type of edelbrock it is. But I don't think it's a thunder series.

I just have a performer 500cfm. Am I correct that when driving around I am only using 2-barrels until I punch the gas to the floor? Even if crusing down the highway at 65mph I am not operating on all 4-barrels? Seems like I really can't feel it when the other 2-barrels open up. Maybe thats how edelbrocks are built.

If your friend swaps carbs maybe he'll let you try the carb on your car before you buy it. Then you can see if it helps you any. My friends & I used to swap carbs around all of the time back in the day (30+ years ago). I probably used 4 0r 5 different carbs on my 273. Finally settled on a 3310 Holley.
