How did they tow cars with steep gears with manual trans back in the old days? I can't afford a truck, so my suv with either a towbar or dolly will have to do. Question #2 What do you all think of running 3:23 posi in a 68 fb barracuda with the following combo. 340 030 over 11:1 comp, 245/250 @050 545/550 lift solid cam, ported t/a heads, eddy street tunnelram with 2 600 holley vac secondaries, 4 speed, centerforce dual friction clutch. It currently has 4:56 posi with G60-14 MT Indy profile SS's. I just want to get it back on the road and the 3:23's would be driveable, plus a 3:23 Posi is somewhat affordable. Would I be able to launch it or just destroy the clutch? Would I be able to towbar/dolly it with the 4:56? It's about 65 miles 1 way to the nearest strip. Thanks for the input:)

Question 1: Put the 4 speed in neutral.
Question 2: 3.23s were the standard gears in a 68, 340. They are fine but only you can decide how much you like them.

Guys would pull the driveshaft.

As for the gears I would say it depends alot on where the cam makes it's power

Question #1 Put the 4 speed in neutral for towing. Remove drive shaft with an automatic.

Question #2 You'd probably like 3:55's. Better for street/strip.

Looks like the same answers as above. lol

Was a time when boom truck wreckers would tie the steering with a rope and tow the rear. I doubt that is legal now.

In the "old days" most guys used towing hubs. And keep the 4.56s put some taller tires on it & drive it. 4.56s with 26" tall tires??You gotta be kidding!

I was just going to say... towing hubs. I've only ever seen one set on a car. But I go into cars as open trailers were coming less expensive and "exotic".

pulling the driveshaft may have fluid leakage problems. I would look for a used trailer
We always stuck an old yoke in the tail shaft so that wouldn't happen. Although you're right... Buy or rent a trailer.

I would drive it as is and don't cruise faster than 60mph, I used to run 4.88's and 275/50 BFG's in my driver and I'm about 65-70 miles from the track, with the cam & heads you have humming down the hwy at 4,500 isn't a problem.

As a side note I did switch to 3.91's later and didnt lose any ET but it was harder to hook on radials since I had more wheel speed in 1st.

I actually have a set of these, they are a set of plugs that just easily slide in the back of any trans. The set comes with like 5 different ones. For manual or auto. That way the trans. does not leak. If interested in these let me know and I'll shoot you a picture so you will know what I'm talking about and you will be able to go and pick yourself up a set of them. They are cheap too.

Don't know about the gears but I would say throw it in neutral unless your worried about the rear and if thats the case then get a u-haul I'm getting one to tow a javelin about 11 hrs away and they are charging me 39$ +tax for 3 days hmmm hardly seems parking a trailer at that price.

hi, as one of the guys from back then , we used tow hubs, they bolted onto your rear axle then used a set of wheels made to fit with offset. the trans was in gear or parking brake set.at thetrack was no big deal to set up for racing. today, a tow dolly with car towed backwards would be a lot easier. I have seen guys do that before.
