This is Terry's wife...Terry is in the garage teaching the car new words because he can't get the timing set on the barracuda. The timing mark jumps around. Any ideas I can suggest to him? Pretty much everything is new on the car...so it isn't as if the timing chain is stretched or anything. Is it a problem with the vacuum? Can something else be the problem? It has electronic ignition btw.

Did he unhook and plug up the vacum advance line? Other than that I don't know. But some one will.

Good luck

Any chance he's wired the distributor pick-up backwards? Not likely if using a factory or conversion harness, but can happen if it's home-wired.

I had one jumping timing issue on my Dart once that would make you cringe - dropped a screw into the advance mechanism, forgot about it, cranked the motor, and broke a tooth off the distributor gear. Still had spark but the timing was completely random.

Make sure the two plates in the distributor under the cap are lined up with the tit of the one plate in the hole on the other plate.

Sometimes they get screwed up when adjusting the dwell gap.

Ask me how I know.

what rpm is he running the motor at while adjusting?

IMO, if it's "Jumping" Around... Say more than 2 +/- deg the timing chain is Junk ( I know you said it's new... could happen) or the Pick up in the Dist is loose. I cant think of anything else

check the dist. for play like stated above. I would check the plate inside and check the bushings for the shaft to see if they are worn.

Yeah, I'd say if you are sure the chain's not stretched, then check for play in the distributor. Also, check those gears, maybe you lost some teeth!! (If so, call 1-800-DENTIST!!!) Good Luck.

Where is the dizzy from??? If its off ebay it may be set up to race. the heavy spring was removed an the light spring was inserted. These tend to bounce alot. Also check if the dist gear is on right(if its an after market gear then it needs to be in a new (you drilled ) hole.
