I meant to post this last month but wanted to show the components that are in the Summit rear disc brake kit for 8 3/4s and Danas. I have heard good things about them as very solid and affordable kits so I went ahead and picked one up for the 8 3/4 going in the '35 Ply coupe. At the time, they were on sale for $401 (and do include the e-brake setup).

Although I know that kits/packages (ex. brakes, exhaust, etc.) sold through Summit sometimes contain parts from well known mnfrs, I was pleasantly surprised to see SSBC pieces in their rear brake kit. Granted, they are not their flagship components but they will work just fine. Here are some pics (incl. some part #s):

Let us know how it goes together (difficult, easy) and if you got all the parts needed

You'll love them! i installed mine about 2 weeks ago, and they went on easily. Near perfect fit. A few tips:
1. Don't tighten the 4 bolts that hold the brackets down until you get the 2 bolts that hold the caliper on started. They tend to tighten up and move the caliper bolt holes together to where they won't align.
2. Be sure to shim the caliper so it is centered over the disk. That is what the round washers (thick and thin) are for. I got some rubbing on mine on the first try, and had to disasssemble and re-shim them.
3. Bracket would not lay flat, I had to whack it with a hammer. No problem, just cover it with a rag before wailing on it!

I lost about 10 lbs per side over the 11"x2.5" drums I had on there. Took about 2 hours on the drivers side (first one), and about an hour on the second side. Took another 30 minute to bleed the brakes. I also cut and re-did the hard brake line.

Pic below is lookinging through the 17" torqlites.

Jimmyray, what size rims are you using? I've got 15x8 on the rear and wonder if the rear disc conversion will clear.

They will clear. I did a quick mockup when I first received them and rolled it around with 15x7s (although the 15x14s are eventually going on). ;)

mine are 17x8's, and easily clear. The 15's should clear as well, maybe even 14's!

Very nice. I've been very happy with all the Summit brand parts I have bought. All way high quality.

How much was the kit Ben? I'm thinking of doing the big bolt pattern upgrade on my car, the one thing I regret not doing initially, and 4 wheel disc's are the way to go.

BTW: Great pictures and explainations Jimmyray! I love seeing you guys post detailed tech-type stuff. It help's everyone.

Thanks for the info, I'm trying to talk myself into getting that kit.

FWIW, the included brake line is just a short rubber line that connect the caliper to your hardline. You will either have to bend the excess hard line on the axle around, or cut and re-flare it, which I did. The line included will not reach to the Y-block on the axle.

Hey Ben -
Hope you see this - sent you a PM on 06/26 and got a reply that your PM 'IN' box is full.

John, it was on sale when I picked it up ($401). The regular price is just under $500.

when replacement pads or further down the road and rotors or calipers are needed, does anyone know if the Summitt or Dr Diff rear disk components for the 8 3/4 rears cross reference to standard replacement parts, or or do you need to go back and pay Summitt or the Doctor every time a new part is needed?

and

do these kits work on the original A body 8 3/4 sbp redrilled to lbp axels, or only the new ones? I saw where there is flange width difference on the original SBP 8 3/4 axels, or does this not make a difference with a disk brake package.

thanks

i'll bet a million bucks they could be had through a parts store.

I know that the Master Power kit I'm installing now uses standard Cadillac calipers and pads. The rotors have dual bolt pattern, so I'm not sure where they came from.

The pads are for a 88 Turbo T-bird. Don't know about the redrilled axles, though, mine are Yukons with green bearings.
