Ok I spent 5 hours tearing out the Hays street/strip clutch that was in my car for less than 400 miles..... Remove the exhaust, starter, drop the 1400 lb trans on my finger (it slipped off the jack), it wasn't a good day..
I was having a problem getting a proper clutch adjustment and after removing the inspection plate I noticed that the 3 fingers on the pressure plate were not all at the same height. After reading comments on the hays website I reached the conclusion that I had to take it out...
The car has sat in the garage for 2 months waiting for me to gain the ambition to tear it apart...
Sure enough after removing the clutch I found a roller wheel inside stuck in between 2 springs... Needless to say I'm not happy with the people at hays or their junk product...
I'm going to go with a centerforce diaphram pressure plate this time.. However to save $150, I'm thinking about using the hays clutch disc.. It's pratically brand new being that it's got less than 400 miles on it....
What's your thought's?? I really don't want to put it all back together only to find the clutch disc doesn't work with the centerforce pressure plate.. I'm thinking it'll be fine but I'd like a sanity check.... Thanks

Hmmmmmmmmm. I have a NEW Hayes clutch in my GTS.Well the engine is new too.Well I have driven it easy being new and all.Everything has woked Great until I got about 400 miles on everything.I left in first gear shifted into 2nd at 4000 RPM and pop and then the clutch started slipping real bad.
Well my car has been sitting for 2 months or so now.I dropped the tranny out inspected the clutch and everything looked OK as far as I could tell.Put it all back together and it still slips.
It is the roller assist type pressure plate and a few on FABO have to me they are JUNK.I guess when I get some money I will be going to the Centerforce as well.....
Your story sure sounds all to familar E55.. Jim

You may have hung the clutch from the getgo, not hard to do. You may be able to claim under warrenty? Are you the sidestepping type? I`m using the centerforce DF. It just barely left enough room to get the fork on, it was a bear, but I got it in. If your disc is thicker? But you maybe ok, worth a try.

I dunno' about that, if QC was lacking on the PP, what makes you think their disc is good?
I'd scream long and loud for them to help fix the problem, at least refund you for their POS clutch kit.

Not fond of Centerforce's *** backwards stuff, either.
Weights on clutch fingers never seemed to me like they'd stay there, IYKWIM.

Mark.

The clutch is out of warranty.... 3 days or 30 miles is all you get with hays...
I plan on sending them the link to this forum. Hopefully other fabo members won't buy their stuff...I took it real easy on the clutch as the whole drive tran, motor, trans. etc was new/rebuilt.. It's a faulty design by hayes and they need to fix the problem...
Yes I'm reluctant to use the disc.. I think they have a lot good products but this particular product (pressure plate) has a quality issue with the rollers..
Reading other members recommedations I've seen a lot of postive remarks on the centerforce..
I'd like less peadl pressure anyway since the hays took more effort than I'd like while driving around town.

Yes..... Me too. Same clutch. Worked sweet for driving around on the street but broke on my 1st 1/4 mile pass at the strip. This was on street tires.

I will never use another Borg and Beck style clutch again.

My Buddy also had a Hays in his 440 Challenger. It worked great until the first time he got on it..Junk after that. Jim

I have a Centerfore II clutch and pressure plate in my Valiant, lots of very hard shifts and so far, no problems after 3,000 miles. I love this clutch, I drive it hard and it grabs good, very easy to drive on the street too!

Any ideas on a new clutch?? I am thinking Centerforce Dual friction.I am at 425 HP and shift around 6500-6800. Jim

hi, Mcleod makes a B&B pressure plate with long style fingers. it's refered as a B&B/long clutch. they work very well, also can add c/w to fingers and can have the base pressure lower for driving ease. once you use these , you'll not use a regular B&B clutch.I have used one in my duster and raced it for years, never had any trouble at all .the ratio of the long fingers is better compared to a regular B&B. if you use a real hard hitting clutch, they break transmissions. been there before !!!

I had nothing but problems with the Hays street/strip, I rate it a 2 on a 10 scale, the OEM clutch worked better with some 50k's on it.
I pulled the Hays a couple weeks ago (4,000 miles on it) http://s203.photobucket.com/albums/...ion rebuild/?action=view&current=IMG_1091.jpg, I got fed up and fried it, at least something was smoking, and it wasn't the tires.

This is on my barely ever driven 73 k original car, and I drive it hard but I wouldn't say abusively.

The Centerforce Dual Friction is what I've chosen to put in it next...
I'm not done the re-install yet.

I have the Centerforce Dual friction set up. It states in their instructions, or on their site, that you should use only Centerforce parts. Don't forget to take out the heavy over center spring. If you don't you will have problems with the pedal sticking to the floor.
I use my car strictly for 1/4 mile and I launch at 6000, sidestep it then power shift at 5800, no problems and the car is very consistent.

Last weekend at the track I ran a 13.38, 13.35 and a 13.33 consecutively and my reactions were .008, .002, and .004

Too bad I red lit in the 1st round! Driver error not the car.

yup i had about 1500 miles on mine when it started slipping took it out and put a centerforce dual friction, i will never buy anything but centerforce anymore! HAYS IS JUNK!!!

Well the Fed Ex guy dropped off my new centerforce clutch today.. After searching for my clutch alignment tool for over an hour I got the clutch bolted in tonight.
I'll have to get some help to muscle the tranny back in.. With some luck I may get it on the road this weekend....
Thanks to all for the advise...

Well I just got back from a 10 mile shake down run and I'm grinning ear to ear.
It's amazing how good the clutch feels and how it shifts. I'm beginning to think the problem with the hays was from day one.
After the 1 year rebuild (everything engine, trans etc.), the trans shifted hard, it was difficult to downshift into second when turning corners etc. I spent the last year tinkering by lengthening the Z bar, changing the trans fluid to Pennzoil synco mesh etc etc. This spring it would "grind" when going in to reverse, and started creeping at stops with the clutch fully depressed. It got to the point that I adjusted the clutch so there was almost no free play in to order to get the clutch to release. I eventually notice that the fingers on the hays were at different height thus the tear out.
The thing now shifts like a dream, almost effortless, easy to go into reverse etc.. And hear I was blaming the guy who rebuilt the trans for it being so hard to shift.
I did have some "tense moments" today though.. Upon inital fire up I heard a significant ticking. I shut it down went over everything and re-started it. Again the ticking, I checked oil pressure etc. and listened closely as the ticking came from both sides back by the rear 2 cylinders. Again I shut it down grabbed a beer, sat in my chair and went through everything in my head.
Finishing the beer I fired it up again and the ticking was significantly less. I then was thinking that it was a lifter(s). I shut it down waited 10 minutes, took the oil fill cap off to see if oil was flowing to the top end and fired it up.
This time the ticking subsided to "nothing". I took it down the road, came back home and again went over everything. I then went into the house grabbed my cell (in case of breakdown) and went for a ride..
Everything functioned and sounded perfect.. It must have taken a little to pump up the lifters as the car sat for 2 months..
It was great to get the 340 into the power band and just easily run it through the gears.. Getting back home I popped the hood and not a hint of a tick, it's like a sewing machine as the only thing you hear is the lopey rumble from the rear exhaust... I'm now 1 happy old man!!!!

Odd, I used the Hays B&B Street & Strip pressure plate and clutch behind a miled 360 and it held up just fine, even with some 3,000 rpm launches at the dragstrip in my 4,000+ pound van.

Did you remember to remove the black plastic spacers on the three fingers? Did you set the clutch air gap when you installed it?

Maybe I was just lucky, but I've no complaints.

My experience exactly! I would go with Mcleod again or a centerforce, i hear of no problems with them. Never a Hays though.
Tom.

I have never used a competition clutch, I use a 11 inch 3000lbs truck pressure plate and kevlar clutch, set-up by a local shop. It handles all sorts of abuse and has never let me down...........down side pedal pressure is murder......... of course I am cheap too......LOL

Yes removed spacers and set the gap.I think all the trouble is in the Hays roller assist type clutch.

I recently finished doing an automatic to four speed conversion in my '73 Dart Sport 340.
I went with the Hays B&B street/strip set up on a brand new Ram billet steel flywheel.
One medium hard launch (not a side step) after less than 30 miles is all it took for something to break on the pressure plate. It hot spotted the flywheel pretty bad.
When the pressure plate was still bolted in the car, one of the fingers was bad loose. I took a bunch of pictures of the pressure plate, showing the problem, and sent them to Hays' tech department. They still haven't responded.
Naturally, the clutch was out of warranty. Fortunately, Summit took pity on me and gave me a great price on a replacement Hays. But, I am really leery of it. After all, it says Hecho en Mexico on the pressure plate housing.
Now I wish I had gone with the Centerforce.

I believe I seen one of those Hecho en Mexico stickers on the centerforce as well. maybe hecho means asembled? Well, heres some info to throw into the mix. I just installed the centerforce dual friction. I bought the CF TO bearing as well to be safe in case something went wrong, so they would`nt say, we don`t warrenty if you use other manufacture componets. I waited for 500 mi. to get into it as recomended. I start to hear groaning from the clutch componets, I figured the Z bar or pedal asembly, cause it made the same noise with my previous clutch, borg beck style. I jack it up and was going to relube Z bar piviots, and a neighbor stopped by and I put his foot to work to try and find where the noise was coming from. Come to find out it was the Pplate fingers and TOB, groaning when pedal was depressed. Mind you this groan could probably be heard, by somebody in the next lane:angry7: I noticed little scaring and teeny chips on the TO bearing perimeter, probably jamming inbetween the centrifugal weights. As long as it does`nt get any worse it won`t bother me. By the way, I decided to leave the OC spring in to see if it would stick to the floor, as mentioned, and it did`nt, so that was the first thing to take out, trying to loose the groan, no help. On the positive side, the centerforce is WAY less pedal effort, grabs good, but damn, I cant stand a groanie clutch:-D I told my buddy this senairo, and he said they all do that? I`ve owned a lot of manual vehicles and never heard this in the others.? Centerforce-only time will tell, knock on wood8)

I put a stock clutch in a 73 Dart mopar head and it never ever made any noise I don't know what your buddy is talking about. Jm

I don`t either, LOL but he`s my best friend, we go back to teenage years, and I put up with him. He ownes a 64 chevelle ss. After taking a ride in my car, he lost all interest in completing his restoration. We crused in his car back in the mid seventys.8)
