I would like to change the shocks and springs, the car is sagging in the rear, and the shocks in the front are cracking. Where is the spring in the front? I don't understand, is the spring contained in the shock? Anywho, how can I improve it's stance, I want the rear up a little bit to make it look a lil meaner. Let me explain my thoughts. I bought this car to fullfill all of my thoughts on what i have wanted for years. I want a mean, cammed up motor, A six speed manual, a racing inspired interior and the paint whatever color I feel like. I am not following any guidelines, just want a muscle car/hotrod.

the front uses torsion bars instead of a coil or leaf style spring.

have any pics on what the car looks like now? if you just want the back up some call espo and get some +1 or +2" springs for it and be done.

thanks, I will take some pics after i mow all of my lawns :angry7:

I wanted to do the same since my '74 Swinger kind of looked like grandma's car when I bought it last year.

On my front, you can lower counter- or raise clockwise with the torsion adjusting bolt. Basically you can bounce the front hard a few times to settle it, measure both sides, raise or lower, bounce again, measure, until both sides measure the same and you get to desired height. Here's some pics of it.

To raise the rear, espo seems like a safe affordable bet if you want to do it yourself like abodyjoe said, I called them the other day and between $2-300 for a pair of leafsprings for my car. But you have to know where your car sat stock, and how much you want it raised from that, to order the new springs. Not from where they are sagging now.

I may let my mechanic do the rear for $300 since he has a lift and everything, haven't decided for sure yet. If I do it myself I will go with espo.

Here's a video that might help, except you should support the axle, not let it drop down like he does. And maybe let the bolts soak in PB Blaster a while so you don't have to bash them loose so much.

One more thing, all I've read says don't try to use air shocks to raise it, they aren't meant to support the weight of the car and can cause some major damage.

I'm not sure you're serious by the tone of your post (no insult intended, if you are), but if what you mean by "aggressive stance", that 70s raked look, forget it! Your car might look mean, but will drive like crap!

As for me (and maybe hamsterhats, don't know), I was thinking of just a few inches, my rear fender trim comes just below the raised white letters, I like the look of front and rear about an inch above letters with a little tire still behind the fender. Not really "stinkbuggy" but just so it doesn't look like my rear is dragging.

Do you think only that much would mess up handling for the Darts? Thanks.

hey dartley, I am serious. Don't want it jacked up, just want an inch or two like dartswinger. Will this destroy handling?

DartSwinger: I'm no expert, but I will go this far ...
The cars are designed to work w/o rake. As you depart from that, you are off factory specs. Not that big a deal if you go about it right. You just need to know how to compensate using TB height, toe-in, caster and camber - IF - you want it to drive right. What I was really suggesting against though, is the severe rake that was popular back in the day.

Same here, my duster (my first moper that I actually own) has 100% shot suspension and was planning on using rear springs that bring the back end up an inch or two. I will not be racing and I like the look of a little body rake.

Comments invited.

Yes, rebuild the entire suspension fr & rr with new springs shocks, front end rebuild kit and bring it down to a reliable alignment shop and let them align it ... all this, of course, if the car is worth the $$$.

The more you raise the rear end the more your throw off your caster, not that stock front ends have much to begin with. And as mentioned before in this thread, that will make the handling deteriorate.

You have realize that on a dart the front wheels are going to show a lot more than the rear ones.

i used air shocks from monroe..cost 70 bucks and you have a customizable height based on you mood! no problems thus far.

Depends what you want. It sounded to me like most posters wanted to really rejuvenate their cars. But is all that is desired is a look, then sure, re-arching, helper springs, air shocks ... they will all do the trick. But don't expect good handling with them; not if the suspension all around is old and needs a rebuild.

this may sound dumb...but my handling has improved i believe since i added 15s in the back and 14s up front and added the air shocks..

No it does not sound dumb. If your handling was poor before, this or that could improve it some. But:
1) There is the subjective vs the objective to consider; the later being timed tests before and after;
2) Alignment issues can be ticky - a little more caster or a little less, the affect on toe in, etc etc, were likely affected by what you did and would be hard to quantify;
3) Your combo - it might have been improved even though any particular thing might be a bad move, since all the parts need to work together;
4) You did not mention whether you altered anything else, even a subtle thing like bushings or a re-alignment btwn the B4 and Aft;
5) How comprehensive is your testing (even w/o numbers) - is is better in all conditions now or just some (like better for low speed but not hywy, vis-versa).

?

PS: You also did not mention the overall diameter change in your tire sizes from B4 to Aft.

Every-time I see any post that talks about getting the stance right then mentions worn suspension components...... I laugh.

Priorities are cool....

Mine...... (in it's simplest form)

1. Get it running well. (Not fast, just well... if it will idle smooth in the driveway on it's own for 15 minutes, I call it good) This also includes all lights, blinkers and so on working....

2. Now that it's running I make sure the brakes work WELL!

3. Now that it runs and the brakes are good I can take it for a drive...

4. I'm lazy and many tire shops do a suspension inspection for free.... I get an inspection, replace all needed parts then get an alignment.

Now that I know everything is good..... I worry about stance and/or wheel and tire combo (this can play into stance if running taller tires in the rear, something I never do... all 4 the same is the way I like it)... If i decide to change, ride height, front, rear or whatever.... When I get it to it's final stance I will again go in for a final alignment.

After I know the car is mechanically sound..... I will start looking at cosmetics or power adders.

I have a nice rake on my 70 Runner and it handles very nice.I raised the rear 3 1/2 inches or so. Jim

FWIW: these are stock replacement "340" springs from ESPO. 6 leaves per side. They are stock ride height. I'd suggest getting good fitting rubber for the front and buying higher rate torsion bars (I have .920's) and running the front lower than stock with a new set of stock rear springs.

that's enough rake for me AND it handles well.

Most things I read say leaf springs are supposed to support the car weight, while using air shocks to go beyond what the springs can lift eventually bust the shock mounts. Sounds risky...

1968FormulaS340 and pntastar69 pretty much saying the route I'm taking, plus dartley in saying don't go crazy about it. Thanks for the suggestions.

My car has a rake to it nothing drastic. Using SS springs in the rear with KYB's all around. It's a little bouncy but handles and cruises fine.

yeah, i might be going a little crazy! I am working on brakes now, ordered a booster which will fix the rough idle and hopefully help my braking issues. I just want it to look decent, it looks like a lowrider grocery getter.
