I was just informed by my jobber that beginning in 2010, Florida will have new auto refinishing regulations in effect that basically mirror California's "5.0" restrictions...................!!!!!!!

Now, these guys sometimes misread things.......I'm prayin' that they've got their wires crossed............

Who out there can tell us anything more about this coming storm?

If this is true, I don't think they'll even be allowing hobbyists to purchase over the counter anymore, and we'll most assuredly be spraying water-based base coats...I don't believe it affects clearcoat, BUT these people are crazy.......there's no tellin' what they'll do next.........

I came here with joy and gladness that I escaped NY.....now I've gone from the fryer into the fire...........Amazing.

If anyone has facts to post on this, PLEASE do. :blob6:

Not looking forward to the switch to water base. It will make our booth useless and you really cant spray it at home.

I've been talking with a painter here in SoCal for the past several months about painting my '69 Dart. I stopped by his shop a couple of weeks ago and he told me my stopping by was timed perfectly because I better purchase very soon if I want something on my car other than water-based paint.
I stopped by again a couple of days ago and gave him a deposit so he can purchase the paint for my car now. My Dart is scheduled to go in for paint around the 1st of September.

i have a close frend that has abody shop and from what she is saying in the next ten years thats all there will be i know back in the 70s we used a water base primer from germany and it was vary good but that was exsperametal.(I hope spelling dosent cont) if that helps

Water based is what all (all major manu's) new cars are sprayed with. For collision shop it's actually gonna be easier...once the painter gets the specifics of it down.

Adam is right.....airflow is critical with water-based. Garage jobs will be tough. My brother is a collision shop painter (some custom) and Oregon will soon follow in Cali's footsteps according to him. Thank goodness for mail-order!!!!!

Well, I'll tell ya'........

I'm gonna invest in a number of high impact bases (and some reducer) to keep on the shelf........I'm gonna try to plan for at least 4 cars in reserve. At least that'll hold me during the next few projects..........OR, will the custom shops still be able to ship the stuff IN to us for a while, "under the radar" ? :read2:

Any idea what the shelf life is on that stuff? I have some really nice gunmetal gray base/clear left from when I painted my truck 3 years ago.

If they are using water base paint that explains why half the new cars running around have the paint coming off them.

:protest: More govermen't regulation, UGGGHHH. I'm about done with it. Just learned that a local code enforcement officer cited someone for "reparing a car in a residential area" ; The guy was changing his sisters front brake pads in his driveway! :wack:

You know, sometimes I really wish I was born in 1948 instead of 1968. :angry7:

I've stored lacquers tightly sealed for over 20 years and used them. It comes down to how well the can is sealed. Base coat is the same although differing chemical makeup.........should last a long long time if kept cool and sealed.

Hey, the govt. is trying to save us from ourselves........where's the gratitude???

First they need to save themselves. LOL:toothy10:

On the paint storage I have some single stage Imron that is 20 years old and is just fine. It's the activator that will harden over time once opened.

Eric, Just you wait!! If those pinheads get their way we wont be able to register a car that we worked on....It'll be deemed an "unsafe" vehicle if you are not certified to work on it. After all we want to keep the public safe ( from themselves ) :angry7:

What a crock of crap!
How many times have anyone or anyone you know painted their car in the garage? I'm guessing VERY few and will/would have VERY little effect on the environment. It's like the emissions control testing that they used to do in palm beach county. If a car is running so poorly that it can't pass emissions testing, it wont be on the road for very long anyway, it'll just stop running. They eventually did away with the testing because there was no positive/negative effect on the environment ( govt tests proved it )

Send all of the people that think it's their mission in life to protect the earth to CHINA and help THEM!. We'll continue to do our part by not letting oil, anti-freeze, or trans fluid into the ground. If I couldn't have painted my car myself....it'd still be sitting in the garage under a tarp. stupid people suck!

Here is a funny law from palm bay
 72.45 TOWING.

No operator of a bicycle shall tow or draw any coaster, sled, person on roller skates, wagon, toy vehicle or other similar vehicle on any public road, sidewalk or public place.

('74 Code, 6-16) (Ord. 70-3, passed 4-2-70)
Freaking redonculous!

Remember this is the "Land of the Free" as long as we do what the authorities/government says. :toothy10:

Should be fine if theres no reducers, hardeners or activators in it.

We have been using Sikkens waterbornes now for over a year at the body shop I work at. All shops in California need to be changed over by the end of 2009, I believe. We changed over a while ago since we knew it was coming and to avoid the big rush.
Our paint shop seemed to have teething problems for the first couple of weeks and slowed down, but were back up to speed shortly after. Water based paints flash quicker, we can paint one or two more cars per day than we previously could. As for shelf life, we recycle our paints as our shop runs a pretty tight ship, so I can't really comment on how long it lasts in a container.

If you guys are already using the stuff, how about a quick synopsis of the beast before us....... What exactly will we need to "re-tool", as it were, what about air pressures, guns, nozzles, cost comparisons, spraying techniques, ETC..ETC......

There are more than a few guys here who would really appreciate the information.

Breakin the law in Socal right now. In between coats :))))
