I have an 8 3/4, 489 carrier, out of a Dodge Phoenix here in Australia (ie. in USA basically a 4 door Plymouth Fury). The set-up is of course way too long for my 68 cuda so I am having the housing shortened to A Body length. The existing axles I have with the 8 3/4 measure approx. 30 3/4" from the axle flange to the tip of the splined end. The axle has a tapered area just after the splines finish, and then thickens again to the same diameter as the splined area. The length of the axle from the point immediately after the taper (in the pic, where the tape measure is pointed to) to the axle flange is approx. 27 3/4".

As far as I can tell from the Moparts site, axle tech section(http://www.moparts.org/Tech/Archive/axle/16.html) the axles I have equate to 70-71 C Body length (stated there as 30 5/8") or 71-74 B Body (same).

I am wondering whether this axle would be a suitable donor to have shortened and re-splined to A body specs. According to the Moparts site 67-72 A body axles measure 27 11/16". I have about that much length in my axle excluding the tapered area.

Has anyone gone this route with a similar axle?

Those C-body axles are the ones you need!! No worries, except maybe finding a place down there to re-spline them!! Good luck with your project, Geof

Thanks Geof, that gives me hope! And yes we have various shops here that can do the shortening and re-splining so that wont be a problem.

I am wondering though whether the axles that I need are actually the longer B and C body wagon axles (31 21/64") ....I've read that somewhere else but cant be sure if its correctness.

Can anyone shed light on this?

I really need to nail this as the cost of shipping axles from USA is prohibitive, so if I can work with axles sourced here I'm way ahead financially.

The end of your axle needs to come up short of the turn down area
or the outside diameter of the spline will be way too small.
I used an 8-3/4 from a 1972 Dodge Polara. Had to get new axels
because the A body length stopped in this turned down area.

Mine was for the '67 Cuda.

Good luck

Thanks Tony, I checked out that link. I'm .5" short according to the diagram which stipulates 26" from bearing flange to tapered area. Back to the drawing board!

How about narrowing your housing another inch than originally planned? Might work fine if you have or are are planning on moving you springs in board.

Yes, I considered narrowing the housing more, but it would place my wheels (4.5 inch backspacing) way too far inwards and require moving the springs inboard of the sub frames. Would also affect handling significantly given the track would be narrowed.
