OMG I am sick. The brand new TTI's I just installed last fall are rusting. The car doesn't have 5 miles on it yet and I used old headers to break the motor in. This shouldn't be happening should it? I need to contact John Cambridge...that's who I bought them from. Anyone know his email? I know he's a member here. Anybody else have this problem. I paid a king's ransom for these because I was told they were the best.

freshayr i'm going to assume you are talking about tti headers? their headers are coated only. they aren't made of aluminized (spelling!) pipe. they will rust if outside or not being used (run). if they get scuffed up during install expect rust at each scuff location. i have a set of headman's on my truck that are aluminum (spelling again) coated that have started to rust in each scuff location. i think it is the nature of the beast for headers...just my 2 cents

theres not much you can do about it.. a couple boards have had the same topic hreads latley.. the tti's are the best because of the fit.. all those headder coatings will rust sooner or later.... the directions clearly state that if the car is gonna sit for an extended period of time then you should spray them with wd40 of something similar... my chrome ti's were fine all last summer till the car sat for 3 months with no trans in it and now they are rusting... its my fault in the long run because i didn't spray them down.. i never thought the car would be sitting that long...

Yup..all headers made of std steel will rust. Whether from outside, or inside..There is no way to fully coat the insides of all the tubes reliably that I know of..SO, any marks on the outside, or thin spots in the coating, will rust. The best defense is a temperature controlled garage, and driving the car to loosen up any corrosion and get the metal hot. My bare steel ones on my truck are 6 years old..gets driven every weekend, and parked outside on dirt in CT..Still no holes..The coatings only delay the rust..not stop it entirely.

I'm having the same problem with my Dougs headers, their Ceramic coated outside only
one of tubes close to the flange is starting to rust been they've been on the car less than a year.
I called Dougs to complain and they said they would recoat no cost

I had a similar with my TTI's. After a winter setting in my unheated garage, I had rust on parts of my outside coated less than year old headers. The sweating from the temp changes during the winter, was the problem.
Did not make since to heat my garage so I went with a car capsule. It solved my problem.

Good info but you do realize that this thread is damn near 7 years old between the last post and yours right.

I think this is a record for the oldest thread I've ever seen resurrected! I agree though, good info. I'm buying a set of TTI's in the next couple of months. I'll be REAL careful not to scuff them on installation.

Eastwood's silver header paint works well. My TTI's are 12 years old and still look good because of the paint. I touch them up every other year.

Yeah it close but the oldest so far is by Abodyjoe. 8 years between post and the kicker about it is that the last post was his the "update" was done by him as well.

Get a big sheet of cardboard and lay it on the ground in your garage under the headers like TTI says to do. You have moisture coming up through the slab (or gravel surface) and that is where the rust is coming from.

I'm sure. All I can do is try to be careful.

My car is parked on a large sheet of cardboard, but for a totally different reason.... :banghead:

My TTI's were also getting some small orange spots starting to develop, mostly down around the collectors, so I got to thinking, about using some cook top ceramic oven cleaner. I got some and tried it in an inconspicious area, and it removed all the orange rust stains, and shined up the ceramic headers beautifuly. They look like brand new again. next year I will lay some plastic down on the floor below the car before winter storage, and plug in my de-humidifier.
