The other day I was discussing my 74 Dart to a guy at the car wash and when I mentioned that the 318 has a Carter Thermoquad mounted on top this man stated "you can't use a T-Quad on a 318". I went on to tell the guy that for three years before I parked the car it had a T-quad on the 318 and it worked fine. He claimed it's not possible due to vacuum leaks. What is going on?

.....What is going on?

Sounds like a real bright guy......they only have a vacuum leak when they're mounted on a 318? Reminds me of guys I have heard at car shows telling people that Ford had to stop making 351 Clevelands because they were too fast and people were getting killed.

i know for a fact that t-quads came on 318,s. wouldn't be able to tell you about the whole vaccum leak thing, sounds like cudavert is maybe onto something with the whole remounting thing. i know that i have an 850 thermo that came on later 318's (like the 80's).

Sounds like shop teacher I had years ago. He was adamant that you couldn't put two 4 barrels on a V8, it would NOT run, he'd say. Well, gee, how did the big 3 pull it off???:bootysha:

LOL....yeah, or they'll say "that's too much GAS!".....nothing about air flow or velocity etc.....:sign6:

That's the weirdest **** I've ever heard... Maybe he thinks if you try to put a TQ on a square-bore manifold (but it wouldn't even fit)????

Well, this 25 watt light bulb guy should be avoided at all costs and you should just simply tell eveybody what a fool he is. Pop on that T-Q and enjoy it, then show him.

Reminds me of this tool....I think it , er he was a bent shovel.... anywhy, he was telling me how there are 2 different deck heights for the small block, between the 318 and the 360.

I just told him he was a flake and to go away.

He is known as a know it all. Tell him 318's came from the factory with a thermoquad and 360 heads right up to 1985 or so on all the cop cars.I know this. I owned a 1983 Plymouth Caravelle ex rcmp detectives car. Heavy duty brakes, suspension, reinforced here and there, and a heavy duty 318 4 bbl with thermoquad. It was backed by a heavy duty 727 automatic. It even had an 8 1/4 rear with 2:94 sure grip. Went great on the highway!

Yes the guy went on to claim that 318's only came with three barrel carbs and that a T-quad simply will not work. He was an older guy so I was respectful to him but nonetheless stated my point.

OK, That's the iceing on the cake...he's "Insane!"

LOL....i just had a similar encounter last week...me and a buddy were at a coffee shop talking cars (he had just put 4.10's in his stang) and old man know it all heres us and decides to interrupt to start telling us all sorts of b.s. while we sit there and try to correct him- he would ask me do you know what lean burn is on a t-q and im about to respond and then he says "no dont say dont say" like he is the master....i wanted to punch the tool- he didnt know jack but me and my buddy were being respectful by shutting up and nodding...this went on for quite some while lol....or the kids in high school who used to tell me a stock civic could beat a 440 dart- i didnt even bother anymore as they are all just on whole other levels of automotive stupidity

Well he swore up and down that there was no way to use a Thermoquad on the 318 and that it would always run improperly due to vacuum leaks. I tried to explain to him that I had it converted from a two barrel to four years ago and that it actually ran great. However, he just wouldn't listen.

there are lots of them out there.my favorite new one about my car is"so you got a blower on that thing ,must be fast when you flip it on".im not kidding.and he just looked at me puzzled when i said its a tunnel ram,not a blower.

I think they watched Road Warrior to many times.

I go to a lot of cruise nights and they seem to draw a lot of brain dead Hoosiers that don't know a single thing of what they are talking about, I will sometimes go along with what they say and I found it confuses them so they change the subject and go away. The worst ones are the ones that had a lot of liquid courage and they get in your face when they talk.

I agree with everyone here, that this guy's an idiot. That being said, perhaps we can take a look at a scenario which leads to his behavior: he tried a TQ with a bad butterfly shaft on a 318. Instead of putting two and two together to get four and realizing it was a bad carb he mistakenly thought it was five and thought the vacuum leak was around the baseplate. That being said it still proves he's an idiot.

psh dont listen to that guy cause i have one on my 318 that i am selling thats a buch of cra[ that guy needs to go back to the shop and read some manuals or somthin

He needs his anti phycotic (SP!) meds and a shot of thorozine (SP!) for good measure.

I Bought A New 1/2 Dodge In 1982, I Wanted A 360. My Only Options Was A 318-2bbl Or A 318-4bbl. I Got The 4bbl. I Put A 125k On This Truck, Never Had A Vacuum Leak. Lol.

FWIW, here is a list of 318 TQ installations, starting in 78, from the Vannth TQ guide...

I suppose if someone tried to bolt a Thermoquad to a factory factory 2-bbl intake, it'd have a pretty nasty leak. This guy sounds capable of such a feat. ;-)
