340 manifolds price out of control. $400. to now $600. plus on Ebay. Looking for an alternative exhaust that gives me ground clearance for autocross?

I saw a picture and thread awhile back that someone used Dakota manifolds in an a-body. Maybe someone else remembers which thread?

most would not even think of headers and ground clearens in the same thought but if you have some skill and patiens you could buy a set of cheap headers and a few 180degree madrelbends and cut them to pieces and build a set of shorty headers, next option would bee the dakota manifolds...

I think there are some shorty designs available. Those might do the trick..

Ok, I went and looked..I cant find any except for truck designs...I swear I've heard of guys running them..anyone have any ideas?

I have been thinking about trying the shorty replacement headers for the magnum truck engines. They replace the magnum manifolds, and I here some people have used the magnum manifolds.

I could be wrong, but it looks like those Hedman's will dump directly onto the K Member. They may also have interference problems with the steering box unless they're cut and modified.

OldVart you are correct they dump right in the wrong spot. Even though they list them for an a-body. They should be listed as pick-up and possibly van headers.

hey, accurate ltd. just released new 1968-70 340 exhaust manifolds. there is a write up in this months mopar collectors guide. i don't know the price but you might ck them out.

The 360/318 magnum manifolds (log manifolds) flow almost as well as the 340 hp for much cheaper.

Last I saw these were $600.

You know the picture listed is for illustration purposes only, right? The only experience I had with Hedman shorties was on a BBC '69 Camaro with A/C and they fit excellent. The only foot note to these headers is they do require a mini-starter, but the headers and a late model magnum starter is still a lot cheaper than $500-600 for a set of 340 manifolds and they probably flow a lot better. Have you or a friend actually bought these headers and experienced the problem you are mentioning or are you just looking at the picture and making an assumption?

middleagecrisis, I realize the picture is only an illistration, and no, I haven't personally tried them. However, there was a thread, here on FABO I believe, a few weeks ago about someone who had installed a set on a SB engine for an EARLY A-body and they ran right into just about everything in the engine compartment. In a post 66 A body, they may very well fit. :)

Well, the application data does say 1967-1976. Having a '75 Dart Sport I can say through personal experience that installing conventional headers was more than I expected.

I saw the same thread that OldVart saw. Plus I have seen them in person. Assuming is not a good practice.

just a word from what I saw...
the stock 318/360 MAGNUM manifold do not...I repeate .. do not flow anywhere close to a set of 340HP manifolds...living proof on that.

The a-body 340 manifolds must different than the a-body 318 manifolds because you guy's call them 340hp manifolds correct? Or are they the same manifold? Does anyone have a picture of them side by side so I can see the difference?

IMO just use 360 log style manifolds in the Mopar Muscle article that I even made a copy of the "vaunted"(and I use that term LIGHTLY) 340 HP manifolds out performed LOG 318 manifolds by 4 HP and 6 torque and outperformed the log 360 manifolds by 1 HP and 2 torque. This was on a 300 HP engine.... does not seem like much of a power gain for that kind of $$$ its kinda like the Extrude hone myth....you get 1-2 more HP for what $600 bucks???? guess if thats worth it to ya go for it but seems like a lot of $$$ for MINIMAL gains. I was all worried about this also and wanted 340 HPs' for my car also...but then saw that article and started laughing....
