a-body vs. e

with 318's the UNDER 4" bore is its biggest downfall.. valve shrouding once you get into a decent sized valve..

the Chevy 327 has a nice 4"bore and a 3.25" stroke.. They hit the mark with that engine. 360hp carburated. 1.1 hp/cube..
not too shabby for factory stock.

Actually the smaller bore is the ONLY downfall of a 318 and it doesn't mean the end of the world. If you take into consideration the small diameter lifters and much shorter rods in the 327 the 318 has an advantage. Yeah the high perf. purpose built 327 360 hp engine may whip up on a 318 pretty easy (remember 99% of 318's were 2 barrels) but do up some 1.88 valve heads right (that's all you really need for a small cube engine under 500 hp) and put in a comparable cam and the 318 will do 360 hp easy with just as much torque, if not more as a 327.
