I just got my first mopar, with the 225 slant 6.
Its a Dodge Dart custom 4 door, from 73.

The motor is orginal, but i want some more power out of the slant.

I was thinking about getting a 4 barrel intake and some headers, maybe a performance camshaft, but most likely Il wait with the cam.

Ive looked around on the net, searching after tips etc., but cant find very much abaout the carburator size.

So I was hoping somebody in here got some knowledge about what works best in the street, with toughs of mpg vs. performance, like wich headers, and intake (2\4 barrel) works with what.

I live in norway and we have to pay about 2 bucks for òne litre of gasoline, so mpg is pretty important!

btw. When i start up my dart, and the engine is cold, the choke works, but when i give it a little gas, it dies out. Even while i drive it, if I let go of the gas pedal. Does somebody know what this might be?

Thanks!

Welcome to the site, i hope you enjoy it here!
Maybe check out the slant 6 forum here, there's a lot of good topics and discussions there.....or check out slantsix.org.
Personally, i would look at getting a super 6 2 bbl intake and carb and maybe some dutra duals for the exhaust (a modified split stock exhaust manifold) and a good free flowing exhaust system. That should help a lot by giving you a more powerful engine that has good gas milage and is very drivable.
I can't help you on the stalling issue.
I hope this helps.
Good luck and keep us posted. BTW, gas is 96 cents per liter here.
Tom.

Webers,baby,webers:cheers:

On a more practical note i'm currently using an Edelbrock 500 4bbl on Cain aluminium intake with extractors.Otherwise stock.
Fuel is no worse than when the single throat holley was on there but go is a lot better.
Webers will be used again when I build a serious engine for it.:toothy10:

i would go with either a small 4brl like a 390 or 500cfm. the clifford manifold is good but i like the look of the aussie manifold! the only headers to use are the hooker super comps. people bolt on headers and a manifold and expet to go faster but i was able to beat there times with just a small cam and clean up of the head. if i were u i would port the head and gasket match the intake and headers. a cam is the most important thing for a slant besides head porting and and compression. im running a .510 cam and full porting and a 600dp carb, and i get 16 to 22 mpg avg!

moparkid, are the Hooker headers better than the Clifford headers?

I know you asked moparkid, but, IMHO I think it would be best to go with either the front and rear dutra duals or a modified rear and a front dutra because when it all comes down to things it still is a slant six and again IMHO I think it's best to focus on torque more than HP for a street /6 that's going to be driven everyday especially on a torquey engine like the 225 (I'm assuming it's a 225) but clifford has terrible customer service. so I guess if I had to choose it'd be the hookers.

well as some say the best street engines have the longest stroke well at 4.120" i think its doing pretty good considering my 505RB stroke is 4.250". anyways the hooker headers have an exhaust riser to a stock manifold to heat in and the after market manifolds have water passeges in them so ur good there. after i broke my motor in a bit (i was still at Wyotech) we thru it on the dyno and it put down 200HP@5k rpm and 240 Tq @5K rpm, i stopped at 5K when the motor was just starting to climb the power band, and it hit 200 tq @2500 rpm! and this was all with a stock converter and trans with 7.25 out back with 2.93 gears... torque is not a problem!
clifford makes an alright manifold but other than that i would buy nothing of theirs... get a good cam from schnider, erson, engle, or egge. a company who has been thru the ropes and knows whats going on! and i dn't care what they tell u with a slant the LSA has to be below 109! preferably 105, seems to be the magic number.

the true power of a slant lies in the cam shaft and head porting...

moparkid, are the Hooker headers better than the Clifford headers?

well i think they are being that they are the only! tuned headers for the slant six. cliffords headers arn't tuned, they just free up HP not make more. the hookers are good quality peices that fit good, tight but good.

Yeah, I remember that I need to run headers with my Clifford intake...I just want to make sure that the Hooker headers will fit with the intake.

do u have the parts number for the headers cuz i still have my papers on it, its HOK-5602HKR (summits number).they will fit but just for ease of installment there are some spots that u can file down, u'll see. also by getting longer studs it can make it a little easier. if i remember i had to cut a 1/4in off the 2in studs cuz i couldn't get the nuts on the studs.

This is Cool. i have a 1973 dodge dart swinger special. its my first muscle car and ive had it since last summer. Its got a 225 slant 6 in it and i wanted some power too.i got an offenhauser dual carb manifold custom built for me and im running dual 2 barrel holley 500 class B racing carbs. this car gets up and goes. ive got an aftermarket header that all all cylinders re combined at 1 throat and then its ran through dual exhaust with straight pipes. 3 inch exhaust baby. im 18 and ive put 5000 into just the block of my 6. ive been spanking all the little chevys down here with their 350 4 bolt mains and 454s with high rise. its good to love a mopar. especially the 6

Aussiespeed!! So Sweeet. I think most of the CLIFFORD stuff is poorly made. My buddy went through 3 headers and gave up (header gasket to head leaks it had to be ground flat and used washers). The customer service sucks and the support?? well only 2 manifolds, 1 header, 3 cam choices?? I'm goina run an Aussiespeed 4, Hookers, and see about the carb procharger setup. ** MOPAR ACTION OCT 2008 PG #76** I love the /6 motor. I have a 1965 Dart GT with a 225.

Hi -Po,

I have a 73 4-dr Dart Custom, too. Based on where you live, the resulting fuel costs and climate, I recommend against headers. It will take away the heat for the carburetor which in turn will make driving on a cold engine worse. The Super Six 2 barrel set-up ought to work well. If you really want power without a big hit to fuel economy, try a turbocharger.

For more /6 info, check www.slantsix.org. There's lots of information and some group buys on /6 goodies, too.

The hesitation when you give it the gas sounds like the accelerator pump on the carburetor is failing, or has failed. I had a similar problem. Most of the rebuild kits do not include parts for the pump. I ended up getting a rebuilt carburetor, which had a good accel pump, and rebuilding it because it was not jetted properly. The carburetor had been re-manufactured by Holley and the Big Box parts store (mass merchandiser) said it was a bolt-in replacement. The bolt-in part was true, but it was not ready-to-use as it was delivered to me.
