darn out cruising running good, gave her a good launch everything perfect then briught her to the house and it died in the street, restarted wouldn't idle quit again. barly got in the drive, went to start again and heard maybe a small pop. after that nothing. not a hint when i turn the key. its got an msg ignition and scouting around noticed it was really hot to the touch which may be normal. what would you check? thanks signed need some help pushing it in the gararge

It comes down to spark and fuel.If you ampell fuel supply there look for spark and the quality of the spark. If you have no spark,do basic checking, does the coil make a spark and the quality?does the rotor turn,is there spark going to the plugs or only into the cap.Do you have voltage at the MSD unit, grounds, you do your system checks one by one.Is the charging system working and the battery fully charged.Check simple things, ballast resistor, control unit, coil, wiring connectors etc.Mrmopartech

ok quick check. turned key on not a hint of spark @ coil, hooked up battery charger and battry appears full needing no charge. its like i have no electric to check anything with. what would shut the electric down completely

Does the engine crank? What distributor are you running? MSD ignitions have been known to fail and they won't work below about 9.5 volts (don't ask me how I know).

no the engine doesn,t crank. gauges don't jump, simply nothing happens. could the ceramic block shut everything down if its bad? in that it has no power is there a way to check the ignition

No lights, no power at all?

First I'd check battery and battery cables & posts for good connection. Second, check your grounds: battery - engine - body.

Check your fusible link. All power for the vehicle (except main power to the starter) runs through this link. Do you have a multimeter or test light? Check for power before and after the fusible link. If you have power after the link, check the main power feed at the firewall pass-thru connector.

just got back from a 150 mi marathon trip to my wifes sisters. now ready to work on the dart. thanks guys but keep those suggestions coming. the battery cables are clean enough to eat off of

when you say bulkhead connector do you mean the ceramic part? can you give some more detail on checking those things

UP AND RUNNING!!! thanks guys. i have to give props to my finnish brother. even though the cables looked good ,the negative side was dirty inside where it meets the post. so thanks for the coaching and i hope all my repairs are as simple. oh by the way i just bought everybody a beer, just don't know how to get em to ya. off to break some mustangs heart

That's great to hear!! :thumblef: Too many times electrical problems in these old cars are too easy. It is just easiest to start from the obvious..

If you send my beer all the way to Finland tell 'em to keep it cold! :drinkers:
