small block heads, 4027596 casting # any good??

Well, I would get a nice set of ferrea valves, bronze guide liners, hardened seats on the exhaust and some viton positive seals to go with the cutting down and machining the guides to .500, do some porting , then cc and mill/correct if necessary to the desired chamber volume.

Intake port-Finding the peak [tallest part/beginning of the short turn] and just roll it around towards the seat but don't touch the VJ angles.
The push rod pinch should to be ground out straight and the rest of the wall blended into the bowl. the roof and guide boss kink can be ground higher and more smoothly turn down into the bowl. The guides can be skinny'd up quite a bit, keep the guide long with an edge at the beginning then rolled/roundish the last 3rd towards the V stem.

The exhaust guide can be ground out completely and the kink can be straightened out a bit too, feel through the freeze plug hole on each end port to gauge with your fingers, you can take around .080 out. Then short turn just wants to roll a hair off the seat then straight up and slightly rolled at the top. Polish the crap out of the exhaust port.

Just some advice.
have fun
ALL THAT vs the cost of some RHS heads? now thats some funny **** you posted right there. ferrea valves? well god-all-mighty i woulda thought for sure you'd tell him to stick some chevy valves in it. remember? thinner, cheaper, kinda like your.. well nevermind.
now IF you wanna bench race some flow benches.. SURE.. no problem.. OH WAIT WHAT WAS THAT you said about dynos.. yes thats right. flowbenches like dynos, mean squawt. just tools. the 1/4 mile is the REAL flowbench. i'll put money on the X-HEADS making way more power (under the curve/peak/whatev) then the 596's EVER would (to the OP.. 596's are still a good head.. no worries).
WANT SOME SCRAMBLED EGGS WITH THAT HAM I JUST SERVED YOU?

anyways his heads (cause he's strapped for $$ like me)

~ check the valves. if there still good.. reuse them
~ get the machinest to do a typical performance 3 angle valve job
~ bronze guides
~ deck the head to true them up. mabey .010"
~ if you feel up for the challenge, a little pocket porting and port matching
------->>>>PORTING 101

BUT BEFORE AND FOREMOST.. get an estimated first with the worst case senario in mind. IE: replacing VALVESPRINGS/LOCKS/RETAINERS/VALVES/etc. then compare that to the price of say some assembled RHS LA heads. and if you have to.. save your beans so you can afford them. not saying you have too.. just an option.. i'm not a mechanic.. i just play one on the INTERNET.
