were they even made? im thinking of going with an 833 and having it faceplated by liberty for the future, and id like to go with an 18 spline if i can find one for the right price and condition...were 18 splines ever made in abody tailshaft lengths? is there a way to convert a 23 spline to 18 spline? id rather not put in a b/e body 18 spline if i dont have too...id just like to know this stuff so i can keep my eyes opened for it!

thanks!

The 18 spline was used in Hemi cars, both B and E bodies. It was never in a Abody or small block.

Really, you don't need an 18 spline.

I don't need an 18 spline as most, if not 90% ,of us don't either.

don't worry about it, put your $$$ into something else.jmo

No they were not available. Yes it is possible to build one; my best friend did and ran it for a very long time w/ a dual disk clutch setup. I also had one a long time ago w/ Liberty gears and setup as a crashbox, but I sold it before I ever found a use for it.

I'm deployed right now, but I'll see if I can get ahold of him to chime in on this.

hey guys i figured there never was an 18 spline in abody tailshaft style

Justin, what you are saying is something i have been thinking about...Im obviously thinking for the future by looking out for 833 since i already have a tranny, but how much abuse can an 23 spline take? ive heard some bash them to bits, then others say they are just as good...so im a little confused lol

my goal for my car is to have it run mid to low 12's on the motor and low 11's on juice, meaning it will only see the nitrous on raceday, but would still need to handle constant side stepping and powershifting with sticky tires typical of a young and crazy driver...would a 23 spline do the trick?

i was planning on turning mine into a crashbox as well...i figured if im gonna set er up for war, mine as well get it faceplated to make sure it can handle it...ive heard about guys swapping 18 spline guts in, just not sure how its done...or if i really even need it either

you would need an 18 spline input, after that it's just an a body main shaft and getting the tooth count to work.

but I think it was a 2.65 1st gear on the 18 spline, but can't remember.

I've run mine at the strip and beat the sht out of it o a regular bases even behind the 410cid.
Yeah the 23 will be fine, it's a pretty durable piece.

what kind of et's are you pulling? and on what tire? the 23 spline is tempting since they are pretty cheap...did you go through yours before you ran it?

passon will build ya one. http://www.passonperformance.com/

So what kind of 4 speed tranny came in the 68 Barracuda/Dart SS/A cars then?

Thats what i was thinking...i figured if they did come with 18 spline abody style tranny's, then they are damn rare and probably go for big cash...but who knows, maybe they had 23 splines??

So then what is this?

By the way that is an all Aluminium case too.

I haven't installed it yet but I have a similar set up on my cuda with a V-gate. I am hoping it will work.

So what does the G.E.R. mean anyway?

Why what do you think it is worth?

FYI This trans came out of a 68 SS/A Barracuda. It was the first car(4 spd I think) in the 8's. It is pro shifted and I have spare sets of pro shifted gears too.

I thought you could buy an A body 18 spline box over the counter from direct connection.

Did the put them in "normal" A body, non SS/AA cars, from the factory. Nope.

23 spline transmissions are pretty tough.

I agree with Crackedback the 23 spline will be more than tough enough for you. If you have any questions just call Brewers or Passon Performance. They will be able to answer all your questions.

That is a nice piece, those are some hellacious shifter rods. i have seen 18 spline short shaft 833's at the carlisle shows on occasion, over the last 6-10 years. i was always told they came out of the hemi a-bodies.

i never said there is no such thing as an 18 spline abody box, was just pondering the possibility...thats a nice peice thats for sure...ive heard quite a few say the 23 spline would be fine, so if thats really true that it would live to low 11's then im a happy man

Superstock A-body hemi Darts and Barracudas came with A-body 18-spline 4-speeds. They were cast iron cases, and all had slickshift gearsets. Later Direct Connection released aluminum Prostock cases for 18-spline A-body applications. They were fully bushed. I have one and it does not look like the aluminum case above. Both of these cases are VERY rare.

Those are the standard Hurst Supershifter and Street Supershifter rods. They are pretty stout

well im no expert which is why im asking, and since there are conflicting opinions, ill just say that these 18 splines must be pretty darn expensive lol
