I am doin a little bit of tinkering with my stock 318. I just picked up a Performer intake and I am considering a cam swap. What carb should I use. I am looking for something I could buy cheap and rebuild.

you just missed one on here for 90 bucks shipped...that I bought...600 cfm eddy..... Thats about as big as you want to go I have ran 600 on 318 little rich but ran fine....500 cfm eddy is plenty...depending on cam and other addons....

I'd look for a 600 Eddy. I have a 600 Carter, same thing, on my 273 an it works nice. A little more responsive down low than the 600 Holley I had on it. But both worked well. And with proper tuning will get decent mileage. I got about 20 with the Holley and highway gears. Not sure about the Carter, I put it on in the fall and swapped to 3.55's. Mileage went down, but it seems a little rich in the cruise mode. Some more tuning and some higher gearing she should be better than the Holley. But for now I like the 3.55's and the smoothness of the Carter/Edelbrock design.

I got my Carter on craigslist for 50 bucks and it just needed a cleaning, and some choke tuning.

well then, now were talking preference...

But it did have better throttle response on the lil 273.
The 600 Holley did work well on the poly 318 I took it off of. So I guess either should be fine, just depends on the deal you can find. Just seems that the Eddy is a bit simpler for the less carb savvy.

I find the Carter/Edel. carbs easy to tune and set up. Reliable in all weather without being tempermetal. A set it and forget it.

Used Edelbrocks are easy to find. I myself like the AVS version of the Carter myself best on squarebore units. 600 is plenty.

A T-Q is also another factory unit that can be purchased cheaply. There a bit different to deal with and a pain until you learn it. The carb must be intaly set up well before bolting it down. Theres measurements everywhere to be taken and adjusted. Once you get this all sorted out, I thikn you'll like it alot.

The problem being jets. I bend AFB rods to size and clip off the extra material.

Holleys can come dirt cheap as well from swap meets and the cost of a rebuild kit is also cheap. I picked up a 4160 for $20, rebuild kit for under $40 and did it all myself. (OK vat of cleaner extra.)
I did opted for a conversion kit to a 4150. It included the metering block and a longer tube and new seals for the transfer tube. Worth it IMO.

I too would say get a carter/eddy carb. I have a 600 eddy on my 318 and with a little tuning I really like it. I have rebuilt holleys, carters, and q-jets and the carter/eddys are pretty easy to rebuild and tune. While I do prefer holleys for higher hp engines there are varying types of holleys for different applications. I would say pick up a good used carter/eddy AVS or AFB.

Im going to try this on my 318. its 2 carter bbd's the guy whos car that is is giving me a write up on it. im planning it for uniqueness and maybe performance. he uses the second carb as secondaries only. the first one control idle and primary fuel system. if interested let me know...i just think its cool
