If you could build a 318 for the street, using anything you wanted, what would you do? I have a mountain of parts and plenty of time, but I keep leaning back on what I've done before. I want to do something really cool with one of these teens I got laying around, and don't want to do the same old. What would you build out of a 318 if there were no limits?

For the street? 390 stroker. Magnum eq heads. Talk about torque!

I'm seriously thinking about punching one out to accommodate a Hughes 426sb kit ,was going to do the 349 thing but have some time to think about it and who knows,

Depends. What do I want this 318 for? Body style? Intended use? how much cash for updating the driveline? What else am I working with here??

I'm running a 73 duster, gonna do the deal, and since I have an extra 318 sitting around I'm gonna build it. I don't mind saving up for the right stuff. At least I have a job again, which is really nice to be back at work. I can do stuff! I plan to save for a rear end first, take some time and plan the 318. There are really no limits in the picture at this point except that I want to drive it alot. I saw the new car craft 318 build with the procharger- holy smokes that's alotta power! I have looked at so many different options and want to look at what other folks would do if they could. Then make a decision and a plan!

Then I'd go with a performance rebuild, hypereutecti pistons, internal balance it. Stock rods with good bolts. Id use the LA-X magnums (uses std LA rockers and intakes) and a solid flat tappet around 230°@.050 and a static compression around 10:1. An RPM and Edelbrock Thunder AVS 650, small tube headers. That's what I'd do.

Yea, no doubt!

I'd do a very similar build to Mopers. I'd zero deck the pistons with the KB 318 slugs they have. (I think Moper was tinking that.) Aftermarket Con Rods if the OE's were bent or whatever. Port match the RPM to the heads if need be.

The other change would be a cam. I'd run a split duration of about 6*'s more on the exhaust side and go with a 3000 stall and 3.91's.

OF course, were not racing this are we? Looking for a more aggresive street stomper?

Id turbo it. 60-1 T4 10 psi on it till it pukes grab another and do it again!!!

I like the 349 idea...

Forged crank, h beam rods, forged pistons 10:1 comp
ported eddy heads, hughes solid roller cam, lifters & 1.6 rockers,
gear drive, victor manifold..

Of course you would Prine, of course you would, LOL!
Nice video A360!

I second that! Boost is where it's at....we have turbos on two of our daily drivers. It's quiet when you want to drive normal, yet there's plenty of "go" when its needed...you get the best of all worlds.
We have turbo kits that can support from 400HP to over 1000HP.

See here:

We also have supercharger kits, too, if you'd rather go that way...we've been boosting Mopars since 1995, so we can help answer any questions if that is the avenue you pursue. Here's a link to our supercharger stuff...

Boost is a pricey route. It's more than stroking. I like mopers plan if your on a budget. But hey,I'll be the first to admit that if I wanted a 1000 h.p street/strip car, boost is where I'd go!

This is allways the problem of any company I have crossed when it comes to boosting my MoPar except BDS and Paxton (Which I'll never use) since there the only ones that have posted prices that I have seen.

I like to have a tagert amount to save for, not just blindly put money away thinking I may be half way there only to be lafffed at on the phone when they say, LOL not nearly enuff money, call back in a year!

A stock stroke 318 with W2's would be cool, One of my friends did one for his valiant and runs 6.90's@100 in the 1/8 with it, it's pretty basic with a 312/.590 MP solid, victor W2 manifold & TQ. He had the same top end on a 408 and was running 6.40's@108 but wasn't very consistant since our track has been poor on bracket nights.

Why even bother with 318's get a 360 and start out with 42 more cubic inches...

Our base kit costs $5500.00. It is rated for 400HP- 900HP.
There are several reasons we hesitate to give "blanket prices". First, when you are investing that kind of money, who wants to base their decision on a "price sheet" posted online? I'd much rather call and spend a few minutes talking to a live tech person to confirm what I need for my exact project, and get up to date pricing. Who knows how old that price is that's advertised online.
Second, there are literally hundreds of options and combinations. You can omit the recirculating wastegates and just dump them, you can add a boost controller (manual or electronic), you can add an intercooler or meth, you can upgrade to bigger down tubes, wastegates, etc..... bottom line is we like to spend a few minutes talking with you to get an idea on what your project is all about. Again, we want to make sure you're using the best possible pieces to achieve your desired power goals. Everything has to work together as a package and we take that all into consideration when choosing turbos and related components for your specific needs.

Hopefully the base kit price will at least give you guys a starting point.

Here is a pdf of what is included in our base kit:

If you are interested in one of our turbo systems, let me know and I'll gladly offer more detailed info.

OMG! I can't believe I just read that !!!!!
LOL- Don't ya mean start with a 360 and then stroke it?" - LOL
Just kiddin.....:toothy10:

Why thank you very much for that. Big spread in HP levels. I do understand (Alittle bit) about what can be added and omited. Thanks for saying that. That was good to mention. Often, that is a question asked here.
"How much?"

We understand everyone wants to know how much so they can budget accordingly or opt for a different path. But unfortunately, one size doesn't fit all...believe me, it would make our job a lot easier if it was, but....

As far as the big spread in the HP levels, the overall kit is the same whether you want 400HP up to 900HP. We're just swapping one size turbo to another within the same family of turbos, so the price of the kit stays the same. When you step outside that particular family of turbos, the prices can vary a lot.

I would definately just drop a stock 318 in and weld up a turbo kit myself. I did this on my '77 W200 Powerwagon 3 years ago and it runs well. I bought a second hand (though it was still brand new and in the packaging) Holset HX50, took off the headers and bolted stock truck manifolds to the motor and welded up some old exhaust pipe I had laying around. At first I had locked timing and just recently have switched over to a boost retard CDI, but the whole project has cost me under $1000 and if I grenade the stock 318, there's more in the shed to drop in. Cruising the highway you get the manners and mileage of a stock 318 and with a push of the go-pedal, you're out in front of the rest.

I personally won't ever build a naturally aspirated motor again. For more power, I'd build a solid motor, but will always go with turbo's.

Nah....you can stroke it if you'd like but a stock stroke will get it done too:-D:-D..although i can wait to get the 416 back:cheers::cheers:

I was asking cause I have a couple 318's. And, the one that's in the car is giving me grief. I have a clatter at mid rpm, the oil light fickers alot, and I am scared to drive it. Once in a while there are even more sinister sound coming from in there, so the new cam and etc that I bought are staying in their boxes, I'm waiting now to save enough for machine work, I'm gonna build the 1970 block I have. I have some 625 heads but I aint sure if they can be ported enough to be worth the cost, but I think with some 1.88/1.60 valves and some pocket work they might be ok. I don't know if they can be gasket matched or not, I don't want to cut into the water jacket, I'm really gonna have to do it slow cause I am so limited on funds now. I had some grand ideas but since the one I was counting on to get me to work has let me down I'm in a pressure situation. I have to get it going asap on basically pennies.

I would do a couple of things..

1. would be a 11.1 comp w5 headed solid roller setup with 5 speed rev'n 7800-8rpm w/4.30 gears

2. would be a 390 11.1 comp w2 headed solid roller with 5 speed rev'n 7200rpm.w/3.73 gears

thats if I had money to play around.

whats your idea of street though?

That's my man! LOL You make me laff. (In a good way of course.)

SCDE, he's a big BIG fan of strokin. That's why I made the comment.
I have a book on charging engines. Didn't finish it up, it was getting over my head at the time. I'd probably have a better grasp now, but the pockets are empty, (Waaaaa!) so I leave it be for now. :toothy10:
