I have the oppotunity to buy a 9 1/4 from a local guy here. I can cut and respline the axles at my school.. But will there be any other issues of it going in?

I have not had a 9.25 apart yet so I'm not sure if the axles are tapered or not. If there is enough meat to shorten and respline then this may be possible but remember these axles are C-clip so your machining of the axle ends will me more intricate as well

l wouldn't waste my time with a 9 1/4.

Even if it's cheap, you're likely to run into problems shortening it.

Contact Dr. Diff and ask him about the potential issues with a 9 1/4 rear

I'm with Crackedback on this. The problem in shortening it is expense, nothing else. Pricey for nothing. Your much better off useing a shortened 8-3/4, DANA or ---Ekkk- Ford 9.

i can shorten it myself at my school..with my shop teachers help.

Sweeet. Then, you'll need spring pads since the ones on the rear are for a different spring. The ISO springs have a large hole to locate the spring where the older rears do not, there spring locator hole is small.

Gear ratio is limited. I see mostly ratios up to 4.56.

The axles are tappered. I do not know if theres support in the aftermarket for this rear or what can and can not be done for them.

dana 60 can be found cheap at U-pull it truck yards usualy with 3:55 & trak lok I picked up 2 for $50 each

Hi Rumble

Though I'm not sure what TMJ's 9.25 may be out of, not all the 9.25's use the ISO crap. The 76 Dodge Camper van (2500 I think) I was checking over at the bone yard the other day has the 9.25 rear but no ISO crap like my 74 Chargers 9.25.

I'll be into mine in the Spring for seal replacements. If ever something serious happends to the 9.25 in my car I'll be looking for an 8.75 & new springs for sure.

If you have ability to do the work yourself just get a 8 3/4 rear out of a C body Chrysler. The one I got to narrow cost me $100 for the complete rear end and got all the brake parts and emergency brake cables too.

9.25 break alot... ive seen alot of shattered pinions and broke ring gears behind STOCK 5.2 jeeps and Dakotas!!

my 95 ram has a 9.25 it started making pinion bearing noise at 70k. i put m1 synthetic oil in after that and lived to 177k, drag duty, truck duty, dumb teenager stuff too, never had a problem. weakest link is the crush sleeve and c-clip axles. :read2:watch out for the 2 different versions, i ran into this with my ramcharger. i believe they changed c-clip thicknesses in 81. i had an early lsd that i wanted to use but couldnt because of the c-clips in my 89 were thicker. you had to jam the axles in to get the c clips to seat but the drum would bottom in the backing plate, when you pulled back out there was no way to get the x shaft through. other than the axle dilema of resplining with c-clips id say go for it.
my $.02
