New tank, Clean tank, or Fuel Cell?

Hi gang. Filled my car up yesterday and when i went into the garage this morning was overwhelmed with fumes. Was hoping it was just overspill through the vents but once underneath I noticed a big hillbilly-fixerall glob of something where the filler tube meets to the tank.( see Pic). The leak coming out of the glob is a rust-colored, gelatinous, substance so I figure the tank is probably shot inside. I've never replaced a tank and it's components, but have heard others gripe about it. So my question is should I replace the tank and original components, clean it out and replace some gaskets, or just get a fuel cell? Any advice is greatly appreciated and thanks in advance!

im taking my tank out wire wheeling plug holdes and fill with air to get dents out stick all the nuts and bolts you can find in there shake it around and get the eastwood gas tank kit new sending unit if yours isnt working and a new gromet

you can do wonders with this

im at a school and they blocked your pictures so i cant see what your picture is
 
I would put a new tank in a ride that looks that nice. I purchased one off ebay
a couple years ago for $130.00 sending unit was $49.00 plus shipping. I had a dash 6 aeroquip bong welded in the bottom then drilled it to 3/8 to pick up the fuel using braided steel lines to the filter. I haven't finished this project yet but when I do I will post pics.
 
Rockauto.com is where to get your tank. Make sure it is a Spectre tank and you'll be in good shape. I think RockAuto only sell Spectre tanks but not sure. After doing a refurbish on my old tank, installing it, then have to take it back out because it was leaking again I will NEVER EVER reuse a old tank that was in that kind of shape. For less than $180 I got a new tank and sending unit!

The new tank will need a new filler neck seal (looks like where yours is leaking seabee). I got that at YearOne.
 
It looks like someone shot some expanding foam up there. As far as the tank question goes, prices for new tanks have come down quite a bit in the past x amount of years. With that being said, before making a decision, I like to pull the tank and then make a decision on whether or not to reuse it.

Yes, there are kits to clean and coat your tank or you can have a radiator shop boil it out and seal it internally (again, if it passes a visual inspection). Of course, you need to weigh costs and time involved. In my case, all my tanks were in really good shape and were originals to the cars and I decided to reuse them and have them boiled out and coated. BTW: Pulling a tank/filler neck is a cake walk. It really helps to drain the fuel though. I have learned my lesson of removing nearly full tanks many years ago. Thank God I wasn't near an open flame.
 
Thanks for the info guys. At this point, by the appearance of the outside of the tank and the color of the sludge coming out of it, I am probably going to order a new tank. And while I am at it replacing the hardware too. I have been battling a stutter issue too and replacing all of the rusted relays, regulators and wires. I'm now thinking bad gas and filters instead of ignition. Just luck that I notice this AFTER filling up the entire tank on my weekend driver lol. Maybe I should park it out by the bus station with a sign that says "Siphon me!"

Check out this link for an alternative to the standard stamped-steel tank. Yeah, I know they're more expensive than a replacement stock-style tank but they're a really nice unit. I saw them last weekend at Mopars At The Strip in Las Vegas.
They're a fully baffled tank made from .090 5052 aluminum and mount using stock mounting straps and emission bungs. They eliminate a couple of the usual leak spots on stamped steel tanks.
This is going to be in my build when it's time.
