I like the looks of the vintage Cal Custom valve covers over the Mopar Performance covers. What's the history of these covers? Did they ever come from the factory or was it an aftermarket peice back in the day?

I don't believe that they ever came on any mass-produced factory setup. Cal Custom (which based out of SoCal) has been making aftermarket parts since the 60's. I don't know if the original company is still in business but I know that someone is still mnfrg their parts to this day. Many of them can still be had through various speed shops (and even through Summit).

They definitley never came from the factory with them. Edelbrock is making a very similar valve cover set nowadays. It's supposed to be kind of a retro-look cover.

Saw some similar design valve covers with the 'Edelbrock' logo on the Summit website for about $239/pair.
Sure glad I kept my original SB Cal Custom valve covers from years ago.
I like the 'old school' look and thinking of using them on my 360 magnum crate motor. Maybe switch off with the polished 'Mopar Magnum' covers I also have for a slightly different look. Yeah, I know they're only 5-bolt vs. the magnum 10-bolt but the 5 bolt locations match up to half the existing magnum 10-bolt positions.

I like them better than M/T or Holley finned covers. About the only other ones I like are the old Eddy covers with the curved cursive script. I want to say that Cal Custom was merged with Moon Equipment a long time ago but I can't remember.

Hey Scamp, those old-style Eddy covers are the ones currently being sold by Summit for about $239/pair.

The Cal Customs are my favorite aftermarket valve cover of all time. I remember even
before I got my drivers license I would go to the local J.M. Fields which had an automotive dept. where they had a display for all the Cal Custom stuff and look at those
valve covers. I now have a brand new set still in the box from the early 70's for my
small block and a really good used set for my big block.

Yeah I have seen those I just can't see spending that kind of money on something that you can get for 60-100 at a swapmeet. The M/T and Holleys go for 30-80 depending on if they have baffles and no cracks (inside corners and around the breather/oil fill holes).

I would stand there (almost 40 years ago) and say to myself someday I'll have a set
and now I have two. It's funny how some dreams never die.

I thought that I had seen alot of the factory oval track engines using a valve cover like the Cal Custom, in a raw finish. This was back in the early 70's to the late 70's.
I thought the were offered from Direct Connection.

I have heard that the original Cal Custom covers from the 60s and Early 70s are the more sought after. People have told me after that the quality went down. I don't know if it was because they were bought out or another reason. Not sure if you can tell the difference in years either. They pop up on ebay from time to time.
