I have a NP 435 trans in my slant six 83 stepside and the rear yoke seems as though it has alot of play in it. It is not a slip in yoke style but a fixed yoke attached by a bolt to the back of the trans then there is a slip yoke on the drive shaft. Does anyone know anything about these trans that could give me some help on either getting another yoke to put on it or how I can fix the play.

Thanks

Jeff

The nut that holds down the pinion yoke may have loosened up on you. Had that happen to me on the front drive shaft on my Warlock. I thought the seal was bad (leaking), when I went to replace it the whole thing was loose. Also the slip shaft splines will wear due to age and contamination.

If the nut is tight holding the trans flange, then the play is probably in the slip yoke. They wear out eventually especially if you don't get regular grease jobs. They fit all kinds of Dodge trucks and vans so a replacement should be easy to find.....either new or used. Sometimes it's the splines on the driveshaft that wears out. In that case you need a new driveshaft. A little more money but still should be easy enough to find. I've never actually seen one strip so I'd run it until the vibration gets bad and then change it.
Thanks, Mark
