I have a 904 transmission behind a 410 sb.I had the tranny redone for racing with new belts, lower first gear, change drum and a TransGo-3 manual valvebody kit.My t.c is a Coan 8 inch 4500 stall.I,ve had the car out for a test drive around the block(2 miles)and everything was good,so I trailered the car to an alignment shop for alignment. After the alignment I went for another test drive to check the alignment(alls good)I turned a corner and poof no gears whatsoever(no 1st,2nd,3rd or reverse, just park)I,m gonna pop a line off to see if the pump is pumping?I was also told to put a spring on the kickdown lever at tranny at 3/4 open for pressure.I,m hopeing it,s just the pump, cause everything was all good.Any ideas what might have gone wrong?Any help will be appreaciated. Thanks

P.S All internals were installed by a very recommended tranny builder for racing.

Could it possibly be a shifter cable problem. Mine got to close to a header once & melted, locking the trans in first gear.

It,s a brand new cable and shifter,I also have fenderwell hedders. Thanks for trying though. When I hold the handle up on the shifter, trying to here clicks going 1,2,3 nothing? So hopefully I can just pull the pan and see whays wrong?

If your not feeling the detent when you shift through the gears it could very well be a problem with the internal shift linkage like GJ said. That's the first place I'd check. Drop the pan and have a look at it.

I still haven't found any info on the TF-3 kit to comment on the throttle pressure linkage. Can't seem to get their library to pull up and didn't have time to call them today.

The pan is coming off in the morning, will the lever detent be obvious if it,s off? Thanks Tracy for your help!

Yeah you can see it with the pan off. You can see the manual valve the shift lever moves when you run the shifter through the gears. If something is wrong you'll probably have to drop the valve body. You can see it but you can't do much to it with the valve body in place.

Well today I pulled the rear line off to see if the pump was pumping fluid,no fluid pumping. Now I had pulled the shifter cable off pryer to checking,so it was in park. Will the pump still pump fluid in park?Or does it have to be in nuetral or drive? Thanks for any help.:read2:

P.S Looks like I,ll be pulling the tranny after the long weekend.Yeahhh hoooo.

Thanks Guitar,I thought about that after checking.I was in a hurry, busy day for me.I,ll get to it after the weekend, which I,m sure I,ll just pull it for fixing.

I had a 518 do the same thing, the selector lever e clip slipped and it moved up like guitar says. You"ll see it with the pan off. By the way, how does she run? I am real curious since my next combo will be very similar.

if it is the detent ball...once you remove the shifter linkage on the arm on the trans...if the lever moves without any clicking the detent ball is gone..

if the lever clicks between gears....you got other problems.

It was running like a raped ape LOL!The shifter lever does click while shifting by hand with the cable off, need to pull the pan.

Hate to say it Scott but that's not a good sign. I have seen the e-clip come off like Dartman said and cause you to loose all gears but when it does the detent ball generally comes out so you don't feel any detent. Before you pull the pan try it in neutral to see if it's pumping fluid so you know. You can either test it by pulling a cooler line off or if you have a oil pressure gauge that goes to 120 lbs or higher you can hook it to the line pressure port on the pass side. It's the port right about midway back above the pan rail. You should have at least 100 lbs. with the throttle pressure lever pushed all the way back. Doing that will ensure you know you have pressure. Got my fingers crossed it's something simple.

I,ll have to check Monday and have a feeling I,ll be pulling it.Going for some R&R for the long weekend,I,ve been couped up in the garage for 6 months (all winter)LOL.Will keep youz updated.

Well I got the tranny out tuesday and to the shop, seems the ears are sheered off the pump.I know your gonna say I installed the torque convertor wrong, but I,ve probably done about 400 engine/tranny installs in the last 30 years and have never had this happen.I,m thinking there was cracks in it from previous owner(used tranny)anyway, the pump is being replaced and he,s also putting in the blue clutches. He said he hopes to get it back to me tomorrow(friday)2 shows to go to this weekend,so will get it back in starting monday.Hope it,s not in the 90,s.

You didn't do anything wrong installing it. But your trans. guy should have at a bare minimum replaced the pump gears when rebuilding it even if they looked fine. A set of gears don't cost much but sure are a bunch of work to replace as you know. For an application like yours running a stroker that plans on racing it I won't even rebuild one without installing hardened gears. Sure sorry to hear all the work your going through cause of this.

Hey Tracy, when I was doing up the t.converter bolts I had to pull the t.converter towards the engine to get the bolts started.Do you think it would,ve been riding on the end of the snout?Maybe the snout is too short?Have you heard of using spacers between the flexplate and the t.converter.I,ll be picking it up today hopefully and will be making some inquirys so this doesn,t happen again.

no that's normal Scott. You usually have to pull it forward about 1/8~3/16" to get it bolted up.
