what should i expect to pay for an 8 3/4 third member???
what's the big differences in the 741,741,and 489 casings?
the gears preferably with 3.23 or 3.55 gears?

and if anyone has one, make me an offer i can't refuse and i just might take it off of your hands..

one more thing, what year did they stop making the 8 3/4?

I've got a 3.55 Ring and Pinion in my garage that came out of a 742 carrier if you're interested and can find a bare carrier.

The biggest differences are the driveshaft u-joint sizes. The 741 uses the small one, and the 742 and 489 use the larger size. The 489 also uses a clutch type suregrip, while the 742 is a cone type that isn't rebuildable.

Hope that helps some!

Mike

ok..so i'm lookin' for a 489 case or 741,,,,,unless the 742 is complete???

i would by a rear part by part, but a guy i know told me if you by it part by part, work has to be done to it to measure it up right....while buyin' the whole chunk..just bolt and go.

489 3.23 sure grip ..complete bolt in unit...375 plus shipping...

do you want a suregrip? if so make sure you know if its a clutch or cone. clutch has a rebuild kit, cone types do not. I bought a 489 case, richmond 3.91s, rebuilt clutch grip and ARP bolts for $450

Actually, the big differences are the the pinion size/strength and the way pinion depth and bearing preload are set. You can put large or small u-joint yokes on any pinion. Basically the 741 has the smallest (1-3/8") pinion stem and uses shims for setup. The 742 is the 1-3/4" large stem that uses shims for pinion dpeth and a crush sleeve for bearing preload. The 489 is the largest (strongest) also know as the tapered stem (1-7/8") and setup same as the 742.

I paid $500 for my last center. 489 case, 3.91s and a clutch unit. I also beat on a 741 case (the waekest) for 5 years with no problems.

yeah, i'm just wantin' sometin' to hold 350hp...and i know a 8 3/4will do it..no need for a sure-grip right? everyone says go with the suregrip...but if i can go to a boneyard and pick up a 3.23 3.55 or 3.73 for like $100, bein' i'm not usin' it as a drag car, i'd opt for that over a $400 chunk...

am i being stupid here?

one wheel wonder will be cheaper.....man ACE you got your shjt together..what do you do??

i'm sayin' a non-posi wil hold uo fine for now..and maybe a year or two down the road i'll grab a posi cheap at a swap meet or somethin'? just need a center chunk so i can run the car that's all...but i wanna stay near the mid 3's so i can still burnin'm a bit..if i want too..hehehe

originally a slant 6 but had a 318 in it...went to get a 340..but the guy didn't deiver what he said he would..so i just ordered a mopar 360 performance block...with a nice edlebrock set-up..gonna be pushin' around 350hp est......changin' the 904 to a 727..has the 7 1/4...this demon id the whole 6 cyl set-up...light duty stuff..now it's gonna have a 360 and a 727..might get a good deal on a rear end..everything but brkae components ($60) and a center chunk...which i'm still tryin' to find....want to have a nice set-up with decent gas milage but still want some low end torque so i can "jump on it tanto." I heard the 3.23 would be ok..and 3.55 would be ideal.. 3.73 would be awesome but would start to lack in MPGs.

why not just leave whats in it, in it? till your done with the motor and tranny..put your money in those parts first..and something will come up for a rear..that 7 1/4 should hang around long enough..

that's what i'm sayin..the 360 parts are all in and 727 is all done..

My shjt's actually all over the place. Lately I've been concentrating on bombing my Cummins Diesel truck. It's incredible the amount of power you can get out of those things for not much money. I fly an imaging satellite (Ikonos-Google it) for a living and been a Mopar luver all my life. :headbang:

Good luck finding an 8-3/4 in the boneyard. Maybe a truck rear, but they can be re-worked to use in a car. I suppose there's still some out there but I haven't spent much time in the junkyards lately. Last time I looked there weren't any left in the couple places I go to around here.

OK ace, how about a dana 60 out of a ford van worth anything....wait.... the guy told me its a 60 then told me its 8 lug can that be??

The majority of 60's are 8 lug. Either FF or semi-floating. There are a few other variations of bolt patterns, but most are 8.

I've been contemplating a dana myself. If you look around, you can find one with the posi and gear ratio you want for very low $.

I have one that I was almost ready to give away.

Just more thoughts, ROB

The 742 doesn't use a crush sleeve it uses shims to set the pre-load. The 489 uses a crush sleeve but Randy's Ring and Pinion sells a solid spacer so you don't need the crush sleeve. Also the 489 uses a tapered shaft on the pinion gear......IIRC it tapers from 1 7/8" to 1 3/4" like the 742 rear.
