well i have a delemia...

i need to get my 8.75 into the dart but i can't afford a 500 dollar new sg or a 300 dollar used needs to be rebuilt one either...

but the spools are about 100 dollars.

so my dart is going to be no longer my any weather daily driver. but still will be taken down to the buger shack weekly and driven to the track...

can i get away with the spool is my queston? i know already some will say no way, but i strapped and need to get things moving.

also can i get 4.56's for a 741 case?

I bought a brand new clutch type sure grip in ebay for $330.00. I know that is still more than a spool, but on the street a spool will be hard on tires and axles. It will work though, as I know many people that run them on the street. As far as the 4.56 gears for a 741, I don't think any one ever made them. Maybe a 4.10 if you can find one, but the highest numerical I have seen is 3.91 for a 741.

agreed about the spool on tires. as for the gear i would have to upgrade to a 742 case then...

Ok here is the problem with the spool on the street....

1. you can't make any HARD corners
2. you will break axle bearings

If you are serious about a spool....

You must make the widest turns possible, not more parallel parking, no parking in parking lots, no u turns......
Otherwise you break the outer race of the axle bearing....
I rebuild rears with guys and spools on the street and this is what happens when you make that 1st killer turn...very few listen, and i see them often with the same noise or complaint....
After a few axle bearing changes....you'll be past the cost of the best Selectable locker... or you'll have no clue and think you have no problem

The above statement is somewhat true...i run a spool on the street and i'm smart enough to know how to take turns properly, have NEVER broken an axle and have NEVER damaged axle bearings,,your customers need to learn how to drive with a spool, plain and simple...

The problem is just the street, not always the customer / or driver....however i have watched many a steering wheel operator make incorrect turns with a spool, or use roads they shouldn't be on due to having tight long corners....

It only takes 1 accident and a cop making everyone make a u-turn to pop a outer race....you won't break the axle, and i never said you would break the axle.....but when you get caught in that situation or similar....the axle will flex and bend under the pressure and pop that outer race....
The more foot print you have...the less of a turn it takes to have a issue.

.

well do to the fact of breaking things easily i think im just gonna have to steal a sg... haha not really just kidding!!

thanks for all your inputs

so does anybody have a clutch type they want to roll down hill that will fit my 741? think there the same as any other 8.75.

i can rebuild it and i already have gears(3.91). unless u have a 4.10 gear on it!

my 657 case is out of a old truck and has 4.10's with a spool in it and a 7290 yoke for the strip. ($125 less spool off ebay)
But I run open 2.73's on the street for gas savings and to keep from getting tickets. It only takes about 1 hour for me to swap pigs, (I swap U-joints too). Running those gears on the street isn't any fun. But it saves parts and gas.

Thought about starting a thread for a question i had similar to this but i think its more appropriate here.

experience with just not spending any money and welding up spider gears??? ive never done it and never seen it or driven a car with it?

obviously its not the best option but is it less risky than a spool due to maybe the spiders that are welded to explode before axle damage is done?

I run a spool in my street car and use a standard street (non-drag)radial. I have had zero problems with axles or my Green bearings. The car turns great although I am not trying to roadrace the thing either. I build custom rearends for a living and I realize the drawbacks of a spool on the street, so i thought I would give it a try. Well its about ten years old now and no breakage and it actually drives very good, even in the rain. So bottom line is run the spool especially in Arizona.

i wouldn't do the lincoln locker, I did it once on a stock 318/904 trans with shift kit and I shot the spiders out the rear of the housing,,, ya might get lucky but not really worth the risk. Just my 2 cents

One other problem not mentioned is if you get caught in a rain, the easiest of turns will have the car swapping ends!

yea that would make since, if it worked good there would be no need for spools and sure grips.. haha, we'll see might try it someday if the opportunity arises.

just curious what rear-end where you using when you tried this and how did you go about welding them up? mig? tig? etc.

add some tire smoke and you can make any u turn with a spool lol. sg is the way to go for sure but if your carefull a spool wouldnt be bad just not the best
