Has anyone seen a straight axle in a 70-76 dart or duster? If you have , how did it look ?

Nope. Seeing as how the engine mounts to the K-frame, it doesn't seem like an enticing swap.

Here is one I seen last summer

There used to be a 69 around here. Haven't seen it for a long time. It was pretty bad *** though.

The gasser look does not look right unless you have a late 40's, early 50's vehicle. Sorry but to me, that Dart looks ridiculous. Unless of course you're gonna put a plow on it :toothy10:.

I gotta agree. That is a period look. Those cars were built that way based on technology at the time. I think the look should match the appropriate technology of the time of the vehicle. Modernizing a vehicle seems to work better than making it look older than what it is.

My apologies to anyone that has done this.

have to agree that 66 is the latest year car you could put a straight axle under and have it look right. As was stated, its a period look and just doesn't look "correct" on anything 67 or newer, unless you are just building a crazy street freak car, in which case all bets are off. That being said, I once saw a picture of a 70-72 Ford Maverick with a straight axle and no hood and it actually looked pretty cool.

I like the straight axle look.

Seen a 64 Polara that was killer looking.

My 67 Hardtop was sitting on jack stands and the front up a little more than the back, I thought it would look COOL with a straight axle.

True, but that doesn't mean they looked good!

IMO front leaf springs are good for trucks and stagecoaches and that Dart does not appear to be either.

If you're looking for a certain nostalgic or period appearance, you gotta stick with the correct period vehicle. '70 - '76 is just too new. It's like putting fuzzy dice, suicide knobs, moon discs and wide whitewalls on an '88 Diplomat .:puke:

thats the best part of this hobby, you can do what ever you want to your car. there are no rules. when was the "street freak" phase? i thought late 60s early 70s?

A car that looks good is in the eye of the beholder no matter what year or period. So I should have a 41 Willey's with a straight axle instead of it being slammed to the ground ?. Mark

Agreed, but superlite asked for an opinion and I gave one.

You can do whatever you want to your Willys, I'm not saying you can't. I would put a 5.7 in it if it were mine. What I am saying is that if you're going for a certain look from a certain period, then you should stay with a vehicle from that period. Most vehicles will not look right IN MY OPINION if you try to backdate them.

On the other hand, I also think that taking an older vehicle and putting a modern drivetrain, suspension, etc. is very cool and looks awesome when its done right.
