I am on a nasty nerve pain blocker which does weird things sometimes t my short term memory so I continue to lose small things like keys..

Anyway, I have all my keys to the 4 car, house sdb, etc..I walking into my transmission guys office yesterday and the receptionist took one look at my large handful of keys and said that was the worst thing I could be doing for my ignition unit..it puts more pressure than what should be on it so I am back to 4 different sets of keys ..and my family ha been alerted to watch out for them just in case I have forgotten t put hem in a basket just inside our door..

Just thought I would pass that one on...

The key is made of a softer metal than the parts inside the lock cylinder. So the added weight may wear the key faster. It wont have any effect on the electrical switch itself.
Here's the inside track... A sevice writer will hand a labor ticket and key ring to the mechanic. The mechanic might growl about fumbling through a huge gang of keys and fobs.
I remember one girls key ring that was a tangled gob of crap well over a foot long. I'm telling ya the WWJD ribbons, etc.. almost reached the floor.
I never made up a line about how this could damage the car but I know some who would. If the mechanic made up such a tale an unsuspecting service writer will repeat it.
It's BS though.

Yep, when I took my ex's (long time ago) Pathfinder in for service they told me the same thing. The weight of a large set of keys might cause ignition switch issues.

Having too many cool keychains and crap -- almost a pound -- didn't damage the ignition switch on my '75 Monza Towne Coupe I had as a teenager, but it required a new lock cylinder when it decided to keep my keys and refuse to spin.

At 1:45 in the morning.

In the graveyard.

Where my boyfriend and I used to go to uhhhhhhhhhh partake in our favorite illegal green substance.

I can still remember the look on my dad's face when he showed up to fetch us.

:) I remember in grade 5 or 6..we would sneak into the town graveyard to smoke old ports ceeegarrrrs :)

Thanks for tagging that memory for me ..

The added weight won't do any real damage.

The main reason you don't want all those keys on your ring when you take your car in for service or repair is the tech now has your house keys and also has your address on the workorder. He can just make copies of your keys and come by later.

Techs in general are not thieves but you also never know who they are or what kind of person you are. When I worked as a tech at a dealer I always asked the service writers to have the customer take the car key off the ring and only give use that key and we told them why. They were very thankful that we were that honest

I use one of those quick disconect key rings .Any time I need to take the work truck in for service all they get is the ignition key and remote .They house and tauneau cover keys stay in My pocket. Also I hang them up on a hook the minute I get through the door .I never have to look for My keys they're either in My pocket or on the hook.

I have also found that ,locking them IN your car is a real problem too.:angry7:

The worst is my daughter. Her "cool" key fobs and their related keys scratch the hell out of Her door.....women..sheesh.

If you take your car to a shop for repair it is suggested that you only give them the keys they need for the vehicle.

some shops have been copying house keys and breaking in later. I realize this does not happen very often just wanted to make you aware of it.

Dang............... the things ya don't think of. Only the vehicle key from now on.

I heard this years back. My vehicle keys are all by themselves and all the other house keys are on a seperate ring. Was told to make this change by a locksmith! Security is another very good reason. Just imagine the mechanic swiping your house key off your chain and breaking in on his coffee break.

I just don't like that big wad of keys swinging around and beating up the steering column. It is also hard to drive when they are clatering to gether and hitting your knees.

Speaking of keys and dealerships.

Another tech at the dealer I used to work at removed a hoo-doo charm from the rear view mirror as he had to replace a control module behind it due to an ignition problem, and forgot to put the hoo-doo charm back around the rear view mirror but instead left it on the floor.....oh my gosh!
The owner showed up and went into some kindof muslim religious rant, made some phone calls and stood outside with his family until a car load of freaking religious big shots showed up with hoo-doo charms and had a friggin prayer dance around the vehicle for about 40 minutes until I guess the god's were satisfied, then they all piled in their vehicles and left.
needless to say it was about the most exciting thing that happened there since the crazed lunatic shot and killed his girlfriend in the parking lot then came into the dealership and killed the receptionist because she saw the whole thing through the window and their eyes met....nuther story, but in that case the bad guy got taken out with an office chair and three technicians clubbed the living snot out of the guy within an inch of his life and held him until the cops came.
Since that day, the owners made a policy that someone must be armed at all times in each department, and anyone could carry concealed with his full blessingsgranted they were legal and not an asswipe.

I took it to say ..our favorite leafy green substance.

The dope has got you confused.

Don't know why anyone would give all their keys to a total stranger. I would only give them the key they need. Perfect way to get you house ripped off.

Depends where you live..I still leave my wallet in the truck occasionally and have left the keys in the truck over a weekend not too long ago.

When we built our house..we have a lot of folks walking through it..we left tools and lumber in it w/o locking and we didn't lose a tooth pick. !

I think the biggest crime that has happened to us since we moved here was when my wife left our pathfinder in a local hospital parking lot 12 years ago, our kids barney tapes were stolen..heck, I would have given them away !

I keep the whole mess on a carabiner. It's further divided to several keyrings to simplify access to other stuff without having to shut vehicles off. This will come in handy if I'm ever in the forest being pursued by axe murderers or something. Beyond that, I could clip the carabiner full of keys to my belt (after removal) for a makeshift flail. On two occasions, it has been used in hauling heavy furniture up to a 3rd story balcony**. In any case, it's convenient to pull off the key I need for something and clip the rest to the corner of a pocket.

Behold crappy phone picture:

**using robust screw gate locking carabiners instead of crappy ones lends to the multi-purpose gear thing
