  • nuttin wrong with that brotha-press on. it was a good day to walk around on the USS Missouri and have a few rum and dr peppers.
Slowly. I actually did a test fit of the engine and transmission tonight. It's tight, but I think I will have room for a fan or two between the radiator and engine. This is good news, because I want to retain the A/C.
    Thanks, Tim.

I've got a better gig in the lineup, working as a locomotive mech. with RXR retirement, medical and all on a W2, with a $3 raise from my current pay, so its all good.

Mostly, I'm just sick of doing all of the critical work at the shop and getting chicken feed for it, while being my boss' tax shelter. I thought it would be a prosperous place after I've been working for him as long as I have been. I'm at exactly $1 higher than what I wanted to start working for him at, six years ago. And the only reason I'm at $1 higher, instead of $.50 more, is because he gave me a raise to try and stay working for him.

I told him it was out of my hands and that we'd see.

I'm glad to have my tools out of that shop and home, where I can make use of them.
HAAA HAAA!!! I totally agree Tim, if $40 worth of fasteners keep my gaskets sealed I'll gladly donate.
...also, working on military aircraft, many technical orders we use state that certain bolts must be replaced every time the component is replaced...and I know what happens when fasteners fail...parts fall off the aircraft, and sometimes people die. So, you could say I'm a smidge fatalistic. I have a tremendous respect for the amount of materials engineering and research that goes into fastener development and my brother has a great deal of knowledge in that field as a Boeing structural design engineer, so I get to hear about all kinds of cool ****. But along with that tremendous respect comes the knowledge and awareness that bolts and fasteners misused or abused do fail and often in spectacular fashion.
Sounds about right...I really should've abstained from the mild pissing match, but I personally believe telling someone to reuse factory TTY head bolts on a performance engine is imprudent and tantamount to foolish advice. The only time I did it, was purely due to lack of funds and immediate need for a drivable vehicle. The gamble paid off, but the bolts were visibly stretched when they were swapped out for new ones.
Oh lovely-that was one job I never particularly enjoyed myself ha ha! I'm doing alright Tim, living vicariously through everyone else's builds...since I don't have any of my toys out here.
I was hoping you'd put the comment on the 'vette thread as your sig.

    Then I kept reading...

And my birthday wish came true, immediately...
That looks like a solid little 5.2! I wasn't aware anyone made porting templates for the factory magnum heads-I might have to check that out when the time comes--pretty decent top end flow numbers for those too. IIRC, the magnum castings usually pick up better low to mid lift flow than comparable J heads, but I might have that backwards. That cam grind is nice and mild too! Probably sounds more like an RV cam-especially with that nice wide LSA. I'm guessing your Dart, race ready, would be around ~3200 or so? With a similar setup, you should be running a solid mid-12, with that, right?
