Your "Proposed" location puts less strain on the carb body where the throttle shaft goes through the main body.
You won't make a top-fueller out of your 318, but it will drive much better with a 4bbl. Those 2 bbl's were never very good. Get a nice small...
if you have the stock style replacement bearings, you need the thrust block, as Ma installed. I would just lop off the 3/8".

I know it's not super accurate, but, have you noticed the AMP gauge jump or hold at far right position? This would indicate voltage (amperage)...

2 reasons...better chamber and hard seats for no lead juice...no notch req'd. I have them on my 273.
up til '72...small bolt pattern ; '73 up w/front discs...large bolt pattern...axles will not swap.
If you can't find one, try some RediRod (All-Thread), drill a hole for the clip, or double nut.
