Charged battery, but doesn't even try to start.

If the lights/stereo works [ post #13 ], then the battery has enough juice in it to energise the ign relay. If not hearing the click of the ign relay, then check the neutral switch.

    Distributor Connection Question

What coil is that? You need to make sure a GM HEI compatible coil is used, such as MSD #8207.

Spark at coil and distributor but no spark after plugs installed and crank at key

Dana, Yes exactly. If you connect to the coil pos terminal as in fig 3, then the ignitor does not get the full 12v. Orrrrrrrrr. If you connect to a switched 12v source, then the ignitor does get the full 12v. If the ignitor has been connected as in the first scenario, this is probably the problem.

Spark at coil and distributor but no spark after plugs installed and crank at key

Trust Pertronix to get it wrong...... Instruction sheet in post #21. Says red ignitor wire should be connected to pos side of the coil. Fig 3 diagram shows it connected to the bal res, NOT the coil pos terminal. If the car has a bal res & the red ignitor wire is connected to the coil pos...

    Vacuum advance issue

I stated back in post #42 that DV used manifold vacuum [ MVA ] not ported on his race car. There is no reason NOT to use MVA on a drag car if it is beneficial on that combo.
  6. B

    Vacuum advance issue

    D. Vizard claims he uses vac adv [ manifold connected ] on his circle track race car. There is no reason not to use it if the engine specs/conditions suit it.

    Vacuum advance issue

I don't think he is saying it pings in neutral. I think he is saying it pings when he hits the throttle while driving. Op should clarify.

    79' 318 ecu is live

If you read post #1, he says even when he grounded the box, it was still live. That means whatever metal he grounded the box to [ the car body I presume ], the metal body parts will also be live.

    79' 318 ecu is live

If the box is 'live' when it is grounded, then any metal section of the car will be live also.

    FBO's black HEI ignition box

    So you have forgiven MSD?

    FBO's black HEI ignition box

RB, Post #134, your quote: 'MSD doesn't haver a vested interest in lying'. Huh? Earlier in this thread you accused MSD of using fudged figures in rating their magnetos to make them look better against the competition....

    FBO's black HEI ignition box

You have proved NOTHING & neither has Miller. Same old, same old... Miller had a vested interest in his video, of course he would say & do things to support his claims. His claims are NOT facts, they are merely his claims.... - he had an MSD magneto in his hand, so he had one available. - he...

    FBO's black HEI ignition box

I am not lying, nor making up ****. YOU INTRODUCED MILLER TO THIS THREAD. Naturally he is pushing his product, I would do the same. But he shot himself in the foot, both feet actually.... These are the FACTS. Do you know how to separate facts from BS??????????? - he is very careful not to...

    FBO's black HEI ignition box

Oh, I do think...... Try it sometime.......... Miller is doing his bit of 'creative' thinking to push his product. The fact that MSD use their primary amperage because it looks bigger is neither here nor there. Just advertising. What matters is what the spark plug sees & the MSD produces more...

    FBO's black HEI ignition box

I did figure it out, dope & the numbers are in post# 125. Which numbers are wrong?
  16. B

    FBO's black HEI ignition box

Brain surgeon. The business end of a mag [ or any ign system ] is the spark current & energy output, not the primary current. Millers 4 amp mag produces 58mA of spark current & 253 mJ of energy. The 12 mag that he is trying to discredit produces 141mA [ converted from peak to RMS ] of sec...

Sorry, saw turbo in post #119 & mis read the context.

    FBO's black HEI ignition box

Bill, I would only advocate bigger plug gaps, & always have, like 060 with a powerful ign system like HEI. Would not recommend it for stock Mopar system, never have. If I am reading your post correctly, the engine that got smaller plug gaps was turboed. Not surprised at all it misfired...

    FBO's black HEI ignition box

RB, I am honoured that you follow me on ST. What name do you hide under on that site? Are you TMP? Some of his nonsense sounds remarkably similar to yours.

    FBO's black HEI ignition box

BillG, Agree that the GM HEI is the way to go if you want to upgrade the ign. It is the simplest way.

    FBO's black HEI ignition box

RB, Still waiting for evidence...... Agree & make you look stupid? I have already done that with LOTS of help from you..... You can bluster all you like...... Agree to 'the rules'............. Your rules, you make them up to suit the argument...... Why would I or anybody else do that?
  22. B

    FBO's black HEI ignition box

RB, Lots of 'hot air' from you as usual. Never any facts evidence. Your hypocrisy is BREATHTAKING: when I quote reputable sources to back up my claims, you dismiss them because you cannot find anything to counter the claim. How many posts is it now that we have been hearing about MSDs bogus...

    FBO's black HEI ignition box

More on plug gaps. Accel 300 + ign recommendations from Accel: "Gap spark plugs to 0.040" for 12:1 compression & 0.050" [ or more ] for lower compression motors".

    FBO's black HEI ignition box

What I will agree to is seeing some proof of your claims. There has been none yet.... - The reason you want me gone is that I am one of the few on this forum who stands up to you & calls out your BS. - I thank you for at least admitting that the HEI adv system is a good system. That you say...

    FBO's black HEI ignition box

RB, RB, RB..... I think I am going to call you Mister Wrong. I will be respectful though & use a capital W. Wrong on all these points in this thread & wrong in many other threads.... Wrong about: - how an air bleed works - unable to explain how an AB works - 44 Promag producing more spark...

    FBO's black HEI ignition box

Fishmen, I re-read your post #96 about the 'best spark' & I assume you mean a smaller plug gap works better in a 2 stroke. There is a very good reason for that, which is unique to the 2 stroke. Two stroke engines are notorious for oiling up spark plugs, nature of the beast. One of...

    FBO's black HEI ignition box

Fishmen, This clown RB keeps thinking of power & plug gaps as in peak power. Whatever the peak power rpm is, the engine starts producing power from idle all the way to peak power. If a larger plug gap makes more power at, say, cruise rpm, & doesn't lose HP anywhere else, than that is win-win...

    FBO's black HEI ignition box

RB, I don't need to read Taylor's book or any other book to understand how an air bleed works. I know how it works, it is not that hard; but you haven't got a clue because you cannot describe the process.

    FBO's black HEI ignition box

RB, Read post #46. More hp with bigger plug gaps.

    FBO's black HEI ignition box

So because YOU tested it, it doesn't work. Must be true then! We are all relieved to hear that. You might want to tell Phil Jacobs, maybe he will give you his PhD in Electrical Engineering, because he says this: ....The sparkplug gap, which can range from 0.018"to 0.125" in a modern engine...
