    1965 small block A904 leak

I got the V8 filter today (bottom). I'd say they are pretty much the same size, thickness etc despite having different part numbers printed on them. The V8 one seems to be made from a different material though. It's not as fuzzy and the color is slightly different, but my guess is that there...

[WANTED] 1965-72 Kelsey Hayes Brake Line Brackets

I got mine from member @davescuda - he made them new. Not sure if he still does.

This explains why the fluid was just gushing out of there. Absolutely nothing was stopping it from coming out of that hole and and another (offset) hole on the other side. For the new gasket I used this Loctite hi-tack gasket dressing stick - that purple stuff you see there. Certainly better...

    1965 small block A904 leak

In the interest of fixing everything else I noticed that there are two trans filters with different part numbers for 1965. There's one for V8 and one for slant 6, but that doesn't make a lot of sense to me. I had a slant 6 one laying around, but ended up ordering a V8 one just in case. Once I...

    1965 small block A904 leak

Yeah, knowing where the massive leak is coming from and that it wasn't my fault is definitely helping. He technically didn't "send the car out like that", because he only rebuilt it and I picked it up and installed it.

    1965 small block A904 leak

Here you can clearly see why you can't use the later style gasket on an early A904. There was absolutely nothing stopping the fluid coming out of this hole. I had told the guy numerous times that it was an early, cable shifted A904 and that they are different from the later ones. He even claimed...

    1965 small block A904 leak

Finally pulled off the extension housing and it turns out the guy who rebuilt the transmission used the wrong gasket and some household silicone?! What an idiot. At least now I'm pretty confident that the new (and correct) gasket will fix the horrible leak.

Well, this could explain the leak... Wrong gasket and some household silicone? WTF!!!

There was a bit of sludge on the bottom of the pan and some glitter, but I'd say that the guy just didn't clean the pan before reassembly or dust got onto some of the parts. I'm sure with some fresh fluid and a new filter it'll be better. Tomorrow I'm gonna take off the extension housing and...

So I've started tearing the car apart to finally address the transmission horrible leak. The pan wasn't leaking, but I still decided to take it off to take a look. As you can see in the photo below there are little specks of metal in the filter. I've only driven the car about 100 miles since the...

Hurricane Hilary sounded much worse than it currently is, but I felt better with the car in the garage. It's actually the first time it's in the garage since the V8 swap because there was just too much stuff in there. I took apart the engine stand to store it. I took the boom off the hoist and...

    1965 small block A904 leak

I cleaned everything and the place where it starts seeping out is the bottom of the extension housing gasket. I used my cheapo borescope to check all around and that was the only place where it came out. And it's not just a little, it's like a quart when the car sits for a few days. The housing...

    1965 small block A904 leak

I'm pretty sure I located the leak in between the extension housing and the transmission case. I started taking apart the slant 6 transmission that I still have laying around and noticed that I should be able to get the extension housing off even with the engine and transmission in the car. I...

Thanks! I think these cars look great with a bit of a rake, but with the added weight of the small block it's too much. I had to adjust the ride height on one side, because the weight distribution of the leaning tower of power was different, but now I still need to bring the ride height up a bit...

I tightened the exhaust manifold to I believe 15 ft lbs per manual, some were kinda loose. It seems to have helped a bit with that ticking sound, but it's still there. As long as it's not getting worse, I will ignore it for now. I still have the '67 273 closed chamber heads and I'm thinking...

I will double check that too. Might need more grinding so the manifold can fit. I also have that heli-coiled exhaust stud and probably could tighten that nut a bit more. The noise doesn't sound like that to me, but what do I know haha. Wouldn't be the first time I'm wrong about something haha.

I'll check for that. I read somewhere here that someone took out the lifters through the distributor hole. On these (smog?) heads the openings next to the the push rod holes are too small. I looked at my 273 heads and those openings appear to be larger. I realized pulling the intake involves...

I haven't taken out the lifters completely, but I've been able to look at the bottom side of most of them and I can't see any wear on them. They look almost new. I forgot to check the rocker arms, but will do tomorrow. On the slant I replaced all the lifters without really checking them, but it...

Pushrods are out. I don't have a glass table, but an extra quarter window... They all seem to have a slight wobble, which is more audible than visible: I haven't cleaned all of them, but there is also some discoloration on them from heat?! With the rockers and pushrods out of the way the...

They were all covered in oil, I just wiped it off to keep the mess to a minimum. The rockers were already assembled when I bought the engine, but I'll double check. I haven't taken off the rockers yet, but will do that now. If the pushrods look okay, I'll probably take off the intake before...

So I took a little video to see whether the rockers move evenly and it appears they do?! There is a bit of a grey on the dipstick when you wipe off the oil, so that worries me a little bit. On the other hand, I have driven the car less than a hundred miles with the new engine. I wonder if...

As you can see that pad under the exhaust port had already been ground down by a previous owner to clear the manifold. The engine was in a '68 Dart before and the manifold is a bit different. The early manifolds appear to need more room, so I ground it down more.

Thanks for the advice, I'm gonna check the lifters when I have a moment. This engine swap is not going as planned at all, but at least I'm learning a lot (about small blocks) haha. It's been almost a year since the slant came out. The engine previously had late 60s exhaust manifolds on it, so...

So it turns out it might not be pinging, but has more of a lifter tick. It gets worse the more you step on it. There was also a tiny bit of white fluid on the back of the dipstick. I think that might be condensation. No oil in the coolant. The engine has been mostly sitting since February of...

Long story short: The RTV didn't do a whole lot to stop the leak. Ended up making my own transmission diaper. Not pretty, but it works. The park lock cable snapped and I didn't want to spend 300 bucks and wait 3 weeks for one from Imperial Services. So I got this eyelet thing, had to shorten it...

[WANTED] '65 console park lock cable A904

This might actually work. Will have to shorten the shaft and maybe drill a hole closer towards the cable. And then crimp it well. Will keep you posted.
