    1968 340 timing

Great advice @AJ/FormS . I had forgotten to mention about the transfer slot setup. The attached photo shows the correct relationship between the throttle blade and the transfer slot. The optimum setting for the blade is to uncover an approx square opening on the transfer slot. It is a real pain...

    1968 340 timing

In general, today’s gasoline burns slower than the good old stuff. As a result, the old engines like more initial advance. I’ve found that 10-12 initial works Quite well in most Mopars. However, this usually requires recurving the distributor to ensure total mech advance does not exceed approx...

    1968 340 timing

Also keep in mind that some timing lights will not give accurate timing results if a MSD is installed.

    Cam bearing let down

Looks like fatigue damage similar to what I found in my 340. I had used standard 1484M bearings. This time I bought high performance SH875S Clevite 77 cam bearings.

    Heat crossover

The shim is not only subjected to high temps but also to the exhaust pressure pulses. .002” copper will not withstand the pulses. I use .015-.020” S/S shim stock.

68 340 with factory air lower crank pulley #

I received some pictures from Jim (RealWing) who has an un-molested 1969 barracuda 340 S with A/C and Power steering. These pictures answer some of the questions about this puzzle for the correct pulley and the way everything goes together. Take a look. Thanks Jim You are welcome. Hope you can...

    Cam bearing let down

Make sure you use high quality bearings. The last bearings I put in my 340 were a standard quality 1484M and when I pulled it apart this year , one bearing started to show signs of breaking up. This time I've got High Performance SH875S MAHLE/CLEVITE SH875S Camshaft Bearing | RockAuto

    Lifters not moving freely

They MUST be able to rotate freely or you will destroy the lifter and/or cam!!!! Hughes Engines has a burnishing tool you can rent I think. A honing tool will likely get caught on the oil gallery cutous. They have very specific instructions to make sure your lifters rotate easily when...
