I've had that argument with more than one tire shop, it makes no sense to me why anyone would require that new tires be installed on the rear axle. One place tried to tell me that it's because of the potential for hydroplaning, that if the rear end has traction it is easier to maintain control...

I had a set of those long ago. One got broken on a snowy night after a lot of beer, damned if I can remember what happened to the other three. I had the center caps too.

That kind of scenario is always in the back of my mind any time I run a two lane highway, which is nearly every day. Truly hope the driver is unhurt, but I would expect there will be some mental trauma from the experience.
