Your right there is a way to do it. But it involves cutting the input shaft.
I read the whole thread to see if someone was going to point this out. Cast crank engines were not drilled to except the long input shaft....

I am pretty sure putting in reverse makes the circuit. Easy enough to tell, shift the trans into reverse and see if the linkage in the hole moves...

With the 4 bolt collectors on those headers, I would say they are old Blackjack or Appliance headers.

If it is engaging near the top, than it should be releasing more than enough to shift gears. Are you sure it's not a synchronizer issue?
