Help with 340 rebuild - Chicagoland area

Unfortunately, I am not nearby, but if you are game to try yourself, the instructional link here by @krazykuda is very detailed and goes step by step

    Removing surface rust from crank

Or, they could be kb hypereutectic pistons for a 4" stroke as originally suspected, but into a piston box he had laying around. You won't know until you get get your tools and start measuring

Do domed KYB 399’s interfere with 302 cast heads?

I just assumed he built really, really good headers ;),

Ah yes, the "ban" saw man. I myself was starting to think it was DTM back and undercover :)

    Cam degree timing 5.9

One thing I found, on my degree wheel there is a little allen key that is on the socket going on the crankshaft mount. Since it also has a keyway, you wouldn't think it would vary, but if you tightened it, you may eliminate some of that tolerance stack. Just my $.02

oil pan - rear main - rope seal?

Off the main topic, but can I ask what is happening with your timing chains? 3rd replacement, so I wonder if you are using nylon gearsets, running heavy valve springs pressure, or putting a ton of migears etc, to go through that many?

Okay, I assumed you did and wanted to address the obvious

oil pan - rear main - rope seal?

Hey Chorty, It probably goes without saying, but did you change the oil filter before and after the flush? It sounds like an oil filter running in bypass mode. It might be worth a cheap $5 fram filter from Walmart to replace and see. If you are getting those pressures cold, there is nothing...

    Happy 426 Day!

I was going to say, Happy 426 Hemi Day, but since this is in the small block section, I thought it should rightly include the 426 strokers out there. I don't have either, but I would be happy with both! If you own either, and are celebrating, feel free to post a photo or two

Pulleys got me pulling my hair out

I guess I am dealing with factory ac brackets as the alternator ears are sandwiched between the front and rear ac compressor mounted both to the front of the water pump in the front, and the rear bracket mounted to the cylinder head. Since the ear of the op's bracket looks bent backwards, I...

Pulleys got me pulling my hair out

I know it doesn't solve your power steering pump issue, but the ears on the alternator are usually on the backside of the alternator bracket, not in front of as shown in your photo.

    Yep...another request for camshaft suggestions.

Sounds like a perfect candidate for a hughes "whiplash" cam. Made just for the low compression 318 with pistons in the hole. If you ever rebuild, the work on the compression with pistons and deck height, until then, just send it with the whiplash cam ,lifters, and springs kit. I have used the...

    Starter woes

Glad to found the issue! I guess a positive is, you are now an expert on removing and installing the driver's side header:) I just wanted to point out something in the mopar connection article that I thought was wrong. They showed filling a terminal with solder and putting the wire in. This is...

    Motor Code...

Hey JT, Not only is your block and 318 and not a 273, but it is a 67/68 thick bore block. Possible 340 size bore potential, or just a 4" bore for more piston choices when/if upgrading. Seems like you are a town or two away. Pm me if you ever need a hand

    Starter woes

I feel for you having done that lately myself, hence my suggestion about the brown wire to the relay. That was my issue. I replaced both starter terminals and the battery terminal, and either never hooked the wire up to the relay, or knocked it off with climbing around the engine compartment...

    Starter woes

Make sure the thinner brown wire from the starter is firmly plugged into the terminal on the starter relay on the firewall. I also never had to shim any starter, and a powermaster is not a low buck dimensions be damned type of starter. You can also test the relay by jumping the two connectors...

    Quick valve spring rating question...

Fwiw, hughes engines spec their first 4 listed hydraulic roller cams (up to 222/226 cam) for small block LA engines to use their valve spring #1110, which is the same 120lbs seat pressure spring listed for many of their hydraulic flat tappet cams.

    Quick valve spring rating question...

In the answer to question #1, I currently run the same heads with a howards roller cam with 274/278 advertised duration and 474/500 lift a pretty mild cam. No issues.
