    318 upgrades

318willrun, I watched your budget 318 hop-up videos where you got your Duster running 13.90's with $500 worth of parts etc. This was great content, inspiring stuff. With this upgrade you ported a set of small port, small valve 675 heads. I'd like to know what difference there is in doing...

    318 upgrades

J heads come in around 64cc with a 0.040" cut, they were 72cc before milling.

    318 upgrades

I bought a totally stock standard 1974 318 recently, that was rebuilt years ago and sat in someone's shed. The cast pistons have 4 valve reliefs and are 0.103" in the hole. I bought a set of cheap Sealed Power 526AP30 pistons which are a true flat top with no valve reliefs and 0.067" in the...

    ~450hp from stock stroke 340?

For what it's worth, I had a stock stroke 340 built almost 25 years ago that made 480HP @ 6,3000RPM & 450TQ @ 4,800RPM, this was for a street driven 72 A Body with a 4,800RPM converter and 4.30 gears. Great motor, which would spin up quick and pull hard. 340 block bored 0.030" Standard forged...

    Balancer recommendation for cast stroker

I have a 340/416 on the go. It has a SCAT cast crank, Eagle SIR rods and Diamond dished forged pistons. The rotating assembly is neutrally balanced, took a lot of mallory metal to get it done right.

Unity Motorsports Doing their 318 Project!

I like Uncle Tony and tune in to most of his stuff when I can. I can see how he would annoy some people though, I get it, but I like his focus on working with what you have, keeping stuff within the era it was originally done and passing on his experience to the next generation. I’m definitely...

416 with Comp Cams XE275HL Hydraulic stick

Some great replies to my concerns. For what it's worth I have an M1 single plane, Victor 340 and a Weiand Stealth to try on the 416. Interestingly, The M1 has the carb mounting flange welded up so it's square bore now, also the plenum floor has a raised 'turtle' section welded in plus extended...

416 with Comp Cams XE275HL Hydraulic stick

A few guys have mentioned this might be a better all-round combo on the street with a dual plane intake manifold instead of the Victor 340, I intend to run. Just had a look in the stash of parts and found a nice port matched Weiand Stealth intake. I know that an Eddy RPM air-gap is probably a...

416 with Comp Cams XE275HL Hydraulic stick

Just to add a bit of a curveball to the discussion, I have a MP 284 / 484 / 108 hydraulic stick in the stash. Is this something that would work with my combo, or am I wasting my time? I say this because way back in the day I had a '68 340 with cleaned up X heads, 9.5:1 comp, cast iron intake...

416 with Comp Cams XE275HL Hydraulic stick

I agree 496, I had a RPM air-gap but ended up selling it. I think the Victor 340 will work, however an Eddy RPM air-gap would be the cat's-*** on the street.

416 with Comp Cams XE275HL Hydraulic stick

Garrett, I don't mind the idea of a flat tappet solid stick, I have no issue with going over valve lash once a year. That Howard's cam though, seems a little too aggressive for what I need.

416 with Comp Cams XE275HL Hydraulic stick

Thanks for the replies, quality control on flat tappet cams are a real concern, so is the stability of rocker gear at higher RPM. I have a set of good used hydraulic lifters that I intend to get re-faced for use with that Comp XE275HL cam I'm thinking of using. I also have a nice set of 273...

416 with Comp Cams XE275HL Hydraulic stick

I have a 340 / 416 I'm screwing together, with the following combo: * Speedmaster heads that have had the once over by my machinist - valve job, bowl blend, checked guides, under-cut intake valves (flow peaks, intake 265cfm / exhaust 196cfm) * Diamond dished forged piston (-21.5cc) zero decked...

Anyone Run a Crane Z-268-2 Cam in their 318?

Hi TMM, I've run plasma moly rings on a number of builds. They seat quickly and work great.

Anyone Run a Crane Z-268-2 Cam in their 318?

I'm freshening up a 1974 low comp 318 with a quick hone, new plasma moly rings and new bearings. I done some home bowl porting & port matched the 675 heads with larger 1.88 / 1.60 valves. SCR will be around 8.5:1 with Mr Gasket 1121G (0.028") head gaskets. Using a port matched Performer intake...

    273 Commando with roller camshaft

Thanks 66fs, l’d prefer a flat tappet solid stick but there’s been a spate of cam & lifter failures in the past few years. I’ve never wiped a cam before, and would prefer it to stay that way. Ideally l’d like to build a mild 300 hp 273 that runs nice on the street with a 4-speed and 3.23 gears.

    273 Commando with roller camshaft

Has anyone built a 273 Commando or other mild 273 mill, with either a hydraulic or solid roller stick? Is there any real benefit to a roller stick in such a small V8? Hypothetical A Body 273 build to base this discussion on: 273 block bored 0.030" with a zero-deck flat-top piston (9.5:1 SCR)...
