Yup, and a mini belt sander. Or scuff with scotchbrite.

Stop in for a cup of coffee

Picking up tools and trying to restart with a clean slate. A task in itself. Went and grabbed my benchtop belt sander. I almost regret it. Its heavy and carrying any long distance pretty much does me in. I hate this crap.

    Does anyone recognize these washers?

“Clipped” washers are a thing. I bought some a few weeks back for a task on a race car where there was not enough clearance on the edge of washer when it was fully round. Sometimes we take them to the belt sander and flatten an edge…

...you have to. Centered left to right is not super critical. As long as the spring or pushrod doesn’t hit. If you do grind the spacer on a belt sander remember to rotate it 1/4 turn in your hand and touch it to the belt, repeat. It will help keep the sides paralleish. If you don’t, it is very...

Stop in for a cup of coffee

Taught the wife how to use my Porter Cable belt sander, she was out in the shop half the day redoing those drawer fronts and cabinet door for the coffee station. Today I've got to head to HD and get some finishing putty/wood putty and she should be painting. All that's left after that for me...

Use a table ban saw to hack off the 340 piston crown .

I use a band saw. The OP has a ban saw. You can try a belt sander if you wish. I would have mine machined on a lathe or a mill. Or better yet, just buy the right pistons to start with. I have a couple of things that were done on my 273 that were made to work but I would change if I had to do it...

Or even a HF stationary belt sander. It may sound rough but it works, lol! If I could swing that stroker kit, though, I would get all over that business. A 390 inch 318 stroker is amazing in its own right, but the 416 incher is a whole ‘nother animal.

    Early 70's brake conversion HOSES.

Buy the el cheapo aspen ones on rock auto and grind them on a belt sander or put them in a vice and cut them with a Dremel. Or just round out the bracket. Or just buy a 5th ave for $500 (damn things are everywhere), return the brake kit, and rob the spindles and brakes off the 5th ave, sell...

all hes got from that list...is the attitude we dont even have the anvil mentioned above, just a big piece of I beam that is the frame of my logsplitter (on the bright side, in true Appalachian American fashion, we can use that log splitter as a power hamer)

    Merry Christmas to me

...was funny was when I was checking out the orbital sander and grabbing an assortment of sandpaper I checked out a 38.00 1/2 inch - 16 inch belt sander. We used them a lot in the steel mill but this thing looked very cheaply made. I walked up and grabbed the 16 inch electric chainsaw and I got...

    Stupid machining question -cylinder head

No, your not. At one of the repair shops that i wrenched at, in the dinosaur days, the shop owner had a giant belt sander machine, that was used to resurface cylinder heads. Aluminum, or cast iron. Didn't matter. It was water cooled, on the belt, when turning on the machine. Used it lots of...

Use a table ban saw to hack off the 340 piston crown .

Better to just slather an old piston with valve grinding compound and go up and down with it for a while with a drill, then clean up the last bit with the LISLE 15000 hone tool.

Looks like you're all set, just grab the belt sander with 16 grit. Remember just hold it flat and level and move it slowly, let the paper do the work.

...to use of old dirty oil is best when doing so. Then use fine stone's after. Did you know you can sand lifters back flat too with a belt sander. You drill a hole in wood put the lifter in and sand away with dads Craftsman belt sander. I wonder of it was a bad idea to post this as someone's...

    Stupid machining question -cylinder head

I seem to recall when I was a kid the NAPA store in town resurfaced cylinder heads by setting them on a black and decker belt sander with some sort of jig. Or am I losing my mind?

    Alignment with ductile-iron rockers?

actually I'm not sure, but maybe just OEM Mopar adjustable rockers. I got them from Andy since he said they'd work fine with my cam/springs, and they have for 1300+ miles (although not 1/4 mile at a time) ;) I spent an afternoon on the belt/disc sander narrowing the aluminum hold-downs, then...

    Alignment with ductile-iron rockers?

I used a stand mounted belt sander but same idea. Summit offers 7/8 shims to really get you dialed in. Because I have to remove mine at the track for maintenance I take a Harbor and etcher and mark ever rocker and hold down so I’m not second guessing myself putting it back together.

Installing headers -- While engine pulled or after re-installed?

...a rattle, and Ive been known to stuff a fence-post up the collector to shift a tube over. The most challenging ones, Ive had to use a belt sander and draw-file the weld on the head flange, to change the angle the tubes leave the head. I guess I've just been lucky lately, but I have installed...
