looking for a dash pad or a cover..

Thank you for replying to this old thread, berneemc! My dash pad situation is still the same. The one they sell is listed as for a '66. Are the '64s the same? I suspect so, but would like to verify because I'm willing to pay the extra $24 to have it dyed red.

    Are our Slants "Unsafe"?

Amen. That's really is looking at the big picture. Fixing what you already have is a lot better than trashing it all and replacing it with something new. If you don't throw it away, you don't have to replace it. Go back a couple of generations when they had to conserve just to survive instead of...

Can you post some pictures of the way it is now? I'm bad about not taking before pics. It makes for a more nifty story when you're done. Include one with the car, you and your son!

    Dash Cluster Voltage limiter Question

Dustedu2, If it ends up working out for you or not, please keep us informed. These regulators are a major pain, and if you have found a good source for a reliable replacement, let us know about it. Ronny

    Speedometer Error

These were on a couple of Studebakers. The speedo heads have a little hole cover in the head unit built in. You have to get a small screwdriver to pull it out, then it uncovers a hole above the gears. I used old-fashioned 3-in-1 lubricating oil. (It was recommended to me, and there was an old...

Head Lights Turn off after 10min

It looks like that diagram doesn't provide enough information. He would need two separate relay circuits: one for the low beams and another for the high beams. The high beam and low beam voltages from the headlight switch would have to be substituted for the "ANY switched +12v lead" connections...

Needles in gauges just peg out

You did the right thing disconnecting the gauges, because they will both be destroyed if they are left pegging out for a while. What you are calling the sending unit for the Temp gauge and Gas gauges may be the voltage limiter. It's usually plugged into the instrument cluster. The problem is...

    Help, wiring Problem (almost)

Please keep us updated with your situation. I'm sure there are others here who are dealing with the same problem. When I got my Dart, the wiring was so butchered I had to work on it for over a week just to pass the state inspection.

    64 Dart: I don't have a stock motor

For the record, this might work:http://stores.ebay.com/TFlite-Pattys-Shop-Mart Found out my 64 also has a 76 motor during a Super Six upgrade. I like the fact that I can use unleaded gas without worrying about the valve seats. Having the original motor would be cool, but it's not a big deal...

    Speedometer Error

x2 Lubrication is also critical. I've had a couple of cars with speedos that bounce around and sound like a hornet's nest. A little oil was all they needed. If you get a speedo shop to go through yours, you probably won't have another problem with it for several decades.

    Uuggggghhhhhh

Don't get rid of that manifold! Even if you can't fix it yourself with the advice here on the forum, a decent machine shop will be able to take care of it for you. For the broken bolts, they can be hacksawed off and the remaining part of the bolt can be drilled through and the leftover parts...

    Super six help!!!?!!!

cudamark is right. If you didn't do it before, try giving it a good blast with compressed air. Even a tiny speck of trash in the wrong place can make it run bad. Please keep us updated-carbs are a mystery to folks like me, and any information on getting them right is greatly appreciated!

Anyone ever seen an odd hose like this?

It's a close call, but I wouldn't consider it to be a survivor even if Mark's dealership scenario had happened before the car was sold originally. To me, an important part of being a survivor is that it hasn't had anything jury-rigged by a mechanic (dealership or otherwise) or by a previous...

    Need to tap 12 volt

How much current does an electric choke need? I have a Super Six conversion with Clifford dual headers, so no choke. Been looking for a replacement for the Carter BBD that would have an electric choke. This thing's great after it warms up, but it's a pig until then. I need something with an...

wat the eff. . i need help

Tell me if I'm stupid, but...:) What we learned is: When a battery is completely dead and the engine is started with a jump-start, the alternator has it's hands full just keeping the motor running and charging the battery a little as a bonus. These alternators were never intended to charge a...

64 Dart GT vs 270 interior door emblems?

My car is a 270, but a previous owner installed emblems on the interior of the doors that say 'Dart GT'. These are the only things that indicate it's a GT. Everything else, including the fender tag, show it's a 270. Here's the question...since these Dart GT emblems are clearly fake, was there...

    Stop changing your oil!

My high school car was a '59 Studebaker that had one exhaust valve stuck open. It smoked so bad some of the kids called it "The Train". It also leaked oil so bad that I never changed it, since it needed another quart every other week. It didn't stay in the engine long enough to get dirty! It's a...

    Stop changing your oil!

Here's a neat ad from the Jan 1953 Popular Mechanics magazine.:downtown: It seems that changing motor oil is just a big conspiracy the oil companies came up with! Wire zapping manifold shield

When I was in high school, Dad and I resurrected a Studebaker that sat for about 15 years. It was running, but bad. That night, I looked under the hood with the motor running and I was mesmerized! The plug wires were so bad that sparks were jumping all over the place. Some things you just...

    68 Barracuda Convertible motor

The same thing was happening with my Dart when I got it. It was just low on fluid. I used plain old type 'A' Automatic Trans Fluid. From my '64 Dart shop manual: Insufficient fluid in system may cause top to raise slowly or cause noise in the pump and motor during operation. If low, check...

Dad was always a Studebaker guy. Our first post-Stude was a 71 Dodge Coronet Custom station wagon. One of the best looking wagons ever. We still have the 39 Plymouth pickup that my great grandfather bought new. When it was Dad's daily driver in the 60s and 70s, strangers were always asking...

    Stock radio wiring

I have a stock 1973 AM/FM on a shelf that may be similar to yours. It has the green and black wires as you described, and they go to the speaker. The other plug has a red wire and an orange wire. The red wire is the 12v power lead, and the orange wire goes to the dial light (controlled by the...

    Converting to electronic speedo

It depends on the speedo itself (it's PPM), your rear axle ratio and the diameter of your tires. Maybe some other things too. The PPM is the number of electrical pulses it needs to register one mile on the odometer. If you get the odometer working accurately, the speedo will also be accurate. If...
